xmpp served on subdomain with address on domain

Hi,
I am trying to serve xmpp from subdomain xmpp.example.com
while having addresses like user@example.com

I set up SRV records (likely wrong)
my ejabberd.yml host points to example.com
snikket seems to be connecting but refuses to upload files
beagle does not want to connect unless I manually specify the server as xmpp.example.com

and I cannot really find tutorial
could anyone help?
