Research

The MIT Internet Policy Research Initiative produces policy research in a variety of technical fields, including

Cybersecurity and Cyber Risk

Focused on building technical tools and risk models and metrics to improve security and safety.

Privacy

Developing accountable systems that protect privacy while supporting data use and innovation

Networks

ANA research focuses on core design principles and technology for large, decentralized, open-access networks such as the Internet. We are particularly concerned with the fundamental design principles that underlie tomorrow’s networks–what we call the architecture of networks. Our research methods include engineering studies, software and prototype development, and the study of networks using a multi-disciplinary approach including law, economics and political science.

Decentralized web

Exploring technical, institutional and public policy questions necessary to advance the development of global, decentralized information environments.

AI policy

Research on the trustworthiness, transparency, security, and privacy related to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems.

App Inventor

Runs an intuitive, visual programming environment that allows everyone – even children – to build fully functional apps for Android phones, iPhones, and Android/iOS tablets. .
