Thanks. Actually, the embedding interface also has a Python.ExecGlobal method which binds everything to __main__, so the recommended way of binding a function to the global namespace is Python.ExecGlobal("import modulename"). I think I will say in the documentation that you can use the python global statement to bind specific global variables, or you can use ExecGlobal to make everything global. Then I will say that the global statement is the recommended way for variables, whereas ExecGlobal is recommended for defining functions. Bit-twiddling

I'm translating a numerical algorithm from C to Python, but have run into a problem in that the algorithm seems to rely on the fact that shifting, addition and multiplication all 'wrap' when the result exceeds 32 bits. Since the Python equivalents do not, does there exist a common workaround for this? For example, I'd like mt[0]= seed & 0xffffffff for mti in range(1,n): mt[mti]=(69069 * mt[mti-1]) & 0xffffffff to never put anything that doesn't fit in an unsigned long in the mt list. Any ideas? --Lars M.

Regions should be locked only briefly and should be unlocked before closing a file or exiting the program. I'm sure Fred Drake would love if someone could take this, rephrase it (so it doesn't look as it's cut right out of Microsoft's copyrighted docs), and submit patches to the library reference. don't forget to emphasize that you must use seek (or possibly os.seek(file.fileno())?) to go to the beginning of the region before you issue the locking command. Extra bonus points if you tweak msvcrt so it exports the various mode flags. And even more bonus points if you add docstrings to msvcrt. Supermega many bonus points for anyone who implements and documents a locking abstraction which works on all major unixes *and* windows. </F>

Use of variables form outside the class.

I declare a variable "x" right in the beginning of a module. Later I declare a class with function defs. I managed to declare varibles inside the class and address them by putting "self." in front of the variable. How do I reach the "x" variable that is outside any class from inside the class functions? I have noticed that, when using python as an embedded language in another program, using a temporary dictionary for a private namespace, and using __main__'s dictionary for my global namespace, I can say: global myfunc def myfunc(): ... to bind myfunc into the global namespace, which allows it to persist across calls. But I want to make sure that is "intended behavior" and not just some implementation quirk, so I can decide whether to document that as a feature. Any advice? Thanx, Bruce

String2List: odd function

Dear Pythonographers - Here is a very odd little something I have written in the process of trying to make ModuleWriter module (see previous message) deal with "documentary" strings. Takes a list-like string, e.g.,: "[['itema1', 'itema2'], 'itemb1', ['cheese1', ['cheese1a', 'cheese1b'], '2'], ''blah' rest of itemb2', 'zib']" and returns *real* lists: [['itema1', 'itema2'], 'itemb1', ['cheese1', ['cheese1a', 'cheese1b'], '2'], "'blah' rest of itemb2", 'zib'] Which, in text-world, looks like nothing more than the removal of some quotation marks, but in Python-world...well, I don't have to tell you what the difference is. This function is probably a poster child for code-in-need-of- optimization. I have probably written the slowest possible version (actually, that's a boast to which I don't have the right to make either!)...I have written the most obvious clunker-headed version. I will be interested to hear suggestions for making it speedier and svelter. (I suspect that Guido's optimizations essay(s) may be useful here. I will have to review them.) GETTING IT: (repeated from my ModuleWriter message) I don't have web space where I can put this right now, so e-mail me at rodisi01(a)my-deja.com, and every day or every other day, I will send a copy off to whoever has requested it. I know this is a hassle, I'm sorry. If it looks like there is serious interest in this thing, I will find some web space for it so you can click and save to your heart's content. In fact, I thought I heard someone in this list talk about offering web space for python projects....;)... ALTERNATIVELY: If someone will point me to (or give me) some suggestions re. posting code to the newsgroup, I could just do that. I'm worried about line breaks and all that stuff. Would an ascii attachment work in deja-world? (I've never had much access to newsgroups, so this is all sort of new to me, and I have to use the free and powerful (many many thanks!) but somewhat frustrating deja-news interface.) I hope someone finds this interesting or at least amusing! Isidor
