opening files in windows and putting seperators in windows

Hi I am trying to fassion a word processor of sorts, and i was wondering if there is any way of calling the Windows 9x open "thing". it is that mini browser that you get when you open files in a lot of windows applications. it there anyway to call this from within Tkinter? If so, how would you do this? Also, how do you add seperators in a root window? keagan schopfer

GUI

Will Python ever include a GUI in the source like Tcl. Would it give any noticable speed increase. Could current licensing allow for example Tkinter to be embedded in the source. ?? Besides the good work in Pysol is there any basic Pacman type move an object with arrow keys type Games to look at . Making some headway in Python lately. Going to take a look at more Multi Media type programming with Director and Lingo . Any comments on Lingo appreciated Fergus

[Newbie Problems] AttributeError from CGI script?

I'm trying to use Python in a CGI script for the first time and have run into a problem I don't understand. I get the subject error message when trying to do a string.replace using one of the values returned by the form that trigers the script. The line of code looks like: line = string.replace(line,"placeholder",form["target"].value) I get an error message back saying: Traceback (innermost last): File "[my script's file name]" line = string.replace(line,"placeholder",form["target"].value) AttributeError: replace Could someone help me figure out what this error message means? In defence of the two-namespace rule

Markus Stenberg and Bernhard Herzog consider the two-namespace rule to be a deficiency in python, and think it would be `simpler' to use `lexical scoping'. The Tim has given an excellent and erudite summary of what that could be asked to mean, since Evan asked and its advocates didn't answer. Personally, I consider the two-namespace rule to be a major *strength* of python: it is a major ingredient in pythonicness. Define a function, foo, which returns a function it has defined, as bar, during its suite; have bar refer to some of the local variables of foo. With lexical scoping, the interpreter is obliged to keep the namespace foo used (on that invocation) for as long as anyone retains a reference to what it returned. I contend that the namespace in which a function executes its suite *should* be discardable at the time the function returns. Lexical scoping would mean that we can't discard foo's namespace when foo finishes execution. The implications of this for garbage collection are singularly unpleasant - give them some thought. The only way out is for the values bar accesses from foo to be transcribed, before foo finishes executing, into some namespace whose lifespan is at least as long as that of bar (and, ideally, coeval with it). Since bar carries around a namespace, for its defaults, with exactly the right life-span, that's the right place to which to transcribe such values (promoting them to globals being, I trust, to no-one's liking). Now, some folk might prefer to have that done implicitly: personally, I'm all in favour of each suite of code needing to be explicit about its dependencies on others. So, yes, this is a matter of taste: the two-namespace rule is an emetic to some, to whom I would commend Algol as a language to use instead of python; but to pythoneers, the two-namespace rule is harmonious, beautiful and kind to the garbage-collector. strange CGI problem

I'm creating a little web-site; for some reason when I view the page in Internet Explorer, it's fine, but Netscape shows me the raw html as if it's a text file. What would cause this? Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Where is python15_d.dll?

Newbie attempt to embed python in C++, calling Py_Initialize() and PyRun_SimpleFile(). Compiles and links, but cannot find "python15_d.dll" when it runs. If I build the release version (using MSVC 6), it runs (uses python15.dll, which is present) but crashes. Where can I get the debug dll? TIA.

Writing multiple lines to a file

Hi I am trying to create a program that writes several lines to a file but I have encountered some minor problems. I write to the file using the following code: f.write(S) # S contains a string I wish to write to the file f.close() The line gets written to the file but if I run the program again the line generated in the previous run gets overwritten? I dont want that, I want the program to append my string to the file without touching other lines. Can you help me. Searching for text mode user interface

Tkinter and threads

Hi, I want to use a Tk GUI for display, that is, have other threads run and display various results using a Tk window. the problem is that whenever Tk starts its mainloop, either on the main thread or on a seperate thread, all other threads are immediately stopped (or to be more precise, suspended until the mainloop exits). As far as I can see, the only way to make things happen, once Tk is up, is through actions of Tk components (buttons, for example). Any ideas of how to solve this ? (will be most welcome !)
