Hi all, I have some really nice code that uses the mxDateTime and strftime to produce lovely formatted dates. I just discovered that it won't work on a Win box. What is winfo_id() under Win32

Hi! I would like to maximize a Toplevel window created from python in Win32. Since I couldn't find any methods (or options) in Tkinter I've tried win32xxx imports. I obtained the hwnd from self.winfo_id() and then tried a win32gui.ShowWindow(hwnd, SW_SHOWMAXIMIZED): It didn't work. I've checked the hwnd with Spy and I realized the window is composed of two windows (hwnds): one is for the outer and one for the inner area (as the outer's child). And winfo_id() returns hwnd of the inner area. Is it normal? So in Windows terminology I have to call a GetParent(hwnd) and for the hwnd returned call ShowWindow(). The other problem is that I couldn't access to GetParent() by importing win32ui (where this method should live). Why is it? Python startup seems slow... (NT)

Under NT, it seems that starting up python to process even a trivial script is pretty slow. With the following python program, helloworld.py: print "Hello World" it takes a second or more for "python helloworld.py" to execute on my machine. It doesn't get any faster the second or third time around. Curious, I used the same program with Perl. It had basically no delay. This is a problem for me because I have a python script which needs to be called repeatedly from another language. I could use Perl, but I would rather not :) Is there anything I can do to improve the performance? Is this a known problem? Thanks! Jason Taylor

Dynamic class construction?

Say I want to make a function that returns a new _class_. I can do this: def NewClass(whatever): class new(baseClass): pass new.SomeAttribute = whatever.whatever return new and it seems to do the job. Is there another way to do this that seems much better for some reason? I guess a related question would be whether having distinct classes with the same __name__ is going to be trouble - does __name__ get used in significant ways internally or is it just there for the programmer's convenience? DU (In case someone feels the answer might depend on the context: it's mathematical structures. For example baseClass might be Group; a subclass of Group "is" a group, and an instance of the subclass "is" an element of the group. So I might want to create a group using def NewGroup(groupOp): class new(Group): pass new.__mul__ = groupOp return new so then G = NewGroup(SomeGroupOp) g1 = G(someparams) makes g1 an element of the group G.)

question about COM and ADO

I'm using ADO from Python, and I'm having a problem figuring out how to do the equivalent of the VB code Dim cnn as New ADODB.Connection cnn.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=c:\db1.mdb" dim rs as New ADODB.Recordset rs.CursorLocation = constants.adUseClient rs.Open "SELECT * FROM Table1", cnn, adOpenStatic, adLockBatchOptimistic set rs.ActiveConnection = Nothing in Python. I'm trying to create a disconnected client-side recordset, which requires that after I open the recordset, I set its ActiveConnection property to Nothing (at least that's how it's done in VB). I can't figure out the equivalent in win32com. Python1-5.2/Demo/embed/demo.c core dump

I am having fun trying to get the basic "embedding" demo to compile, link and run. First, on Linux, I needed to add -lpthread to the Library options in the makefile, and I had to remove -lsocket. Any idea why that would be? Hmm. Do I need to install libsocket? Couldn't find any libsock*.rpm on my RedHat 6.1 CD so I have no idea what libsocket is. Anyways, I just removed -lsocket and it links okay. Then I try to run it and I get the "Hello Brave New World" message (from printf) and the first attempt to access Python causes a core dump. I ran inside gdb and the crash more specifically appears to be: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x400ca093 in _IO_vfprintf (s=0x80a8a78, format=0x8090c04 "(", ap=0xbffffb5c) at vfprintf.c:1059 Any ideas what I'm doing wrong and why this is crashing? -- Warren Postma ZTR Control Systems

The issue is described in the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q197/8/20.ASP To handle the MAPIInitialize call as required you can do the following: import mapi mapi.MAPIInitialize((mapi.MAPI_INIT_VERSION, mapi.MAPI_NT_SERVICE)) To handle the MAPILogonEx requirement the following MIGHT work from within the service: # assumes import mapi. rawSession = mapi.MAPILogonEx(0, <profile name>, <password>, mapi.MAPI_EXPLICIT_PROFILE | mapi.MAPI_NEW_SESSION | mapi.MAPI_NO_MAIL | mapi.MAPI_NT_SERVICE) # assume session points at a CDO/Active Messageing session object. session.Logon(profileName=<blah>, profilePassword=<blah>, showDialog=0, newSession = 0, NoMail=1) This should hopefully will allow you to do what you want, assuming your service already is authenticated as the user who can log into the passed in MAPI profile. problems with blocking pipes, threading

Hallo, I'm on the way to implement a process manager to start and finish specific processes. I do that with fork and execv under Solaris and with Mark Hammond's win32 extensions under Windows NT. All starts and finishs correct. But if I try to redirect the childs stdout with a pipe and read it out parallel from parent, the read-function blocks until the child is killed. Here is a short example of my test programm. I don't know what's wrong. I tried two threads, but still blocking. The threading modul seems also to be not correct. Threads on my Sun don't work parallel. Has anybody also such problems or a solution? The example programm is ones from Mark Hammond's example. I modified it. The command is only a little program which does a few outputs and delays. Thanks for hints and help. Can it be, that an other way is more effective for my problem??? Reading pipermail archives with mutt

Somehow mutt is not able to read the mail archives downloadable from Python.org's SIG pages. The simple /bin/mail will grok them correctly and list the contents, but mutt doesn't find any mails. IIRC, that's true not only for Python.org's mailing list archives, but also for other archives. I'm not sure, though, if these archives perhaps are all written by pipermail. Has anybody else noticed this before ? Is there any simple resolution ? Gregor
