Does Python 2.0b1 support https on Windows?

I remember reading that support for OpenSSL and https was added into socket, urllib and httplib in Python 1.6, but I don't see any mention of it in the Python 2.0b1 release document. Does anyone know if it's in there? Does it work on Windows NT? Do I have to compile a special version of Python to enable this stuff or does the regular Windows installer include ssl and https support? M2Crypto gives me this capability with Python 1.5.2 on Windows, but it's got a couple of known bugs that I have to work around, so I'm hoping there's something more solid in Python 2.0. -- - Geoff Talvola Parlance Corporation gtalvola(a)NameConnector.com

Secure Passwords in Memory

I searched DejaNews and found some similar topics, but nothing which really answered my question. I need to get the root password from the user to exec a program which requires root privileges. I would like to immediately zero out the memory used to store the password. This is easy in a language such as C, but i don't want to write a module just for this. Win32com and unicode problems - ordinal not in range(128)

I am messing around with strings returned from the internet explorer com-object.. Since you later mention you're using 1.6, the 1.6 license says you can "reproduce, ... perform and/or display publicly, prepare derivative works, distribute, and otherwise use Python 1.6 alone or in any derivative version ...", the only requirement being that you leave CNRI's copyright notice in there. Oh, there is also the question of "ABI", how the compiler layouts out structs and stack frames and such, but generally compilers follow Microsoft's (or whatever the "native" vendor is) lead in order to be able to consume windows.h (or whatever platform specific headers/shared libraries, w/o resorting to something hacky like modifying the headers or providing thunking libraries). And there aren't many ABI choices in C that don't have obvious answers. import libraries among various Win32 linkers

The import libraries in Metrowerks CodeWarrior are Visual C++ 6.0 format. Given the directory names, they are probably directly from the Win32 SDK. The import libraries in a recent Cygwin I have installed strongly resemble the Visual C++ 5.0 import libraries, but they differ in some incidental ways, like using the name __head_libkernel32_a instead of the name __IMPORT_DESCRIPTOR_KERNEL32 , using section names .idata$2,4,5,6,7 instead of 2-6. I ran Visual C++ dumpbin 5.10.7303 over said files. I bet you can mostly interchange the .libs just fine. Maybe Cygwin doesn't consume the VC6 format. Drat, then again, no, not quite. If you generate the import libs with Cygwin, they only work with Cygwin, this is due to small bugs, fixable in Cygwin. If you generate the import libs with CodeWarrior, I didn't try that, probably just VC6 and CodeWarrior can consume. VC5 seems a reasonable lowest denominator. Just for running "lib -def:foo.def". But past a certain size, maintainability escapes language differences, and is more a factor of overall system architecture.
