WIN32 DBM help needed

I'm trying to work my way through various examples in Mark Lutz's book "Programming Python" and have hit a snag with dbm. Specifically, if I simply import anybdm and then open a file, no problem. Then I retrieved a port of the GDBM 1.7.3 Python support module and put it's gdbm.pyd file in the Python\DLLs directory. The examples still don't work, nor does the "formtbl.py" example. I can perform an "import gdbm" but not "import dbm", thus the examples fail. Can someone help me untangle this mess?

newbie: python with mac web server?

Hi folks, I am an initiate to Python, and have had some very encouraging success with coding standalone tools (mainly text munging). But the reason I am interested in Python is as a middleware web server programming language. My OS of choice is MacOS, and I have a simple website set up from my house on my DSL line. I would love to be able to use Python to code dynamic web pages for this grassroots setup. Can anyone comment? Is this possible? Has anyone done it? Thanks for your insights. wxPython and EVT_UPDATE_UI

I am trying to implement checked menu items like radio buttons (only one of four menu items can be checked at a time). I tried using EVT_UPDATE_UI(<window>,<id>,<function>), in the same way that the demos use EVT_MENU(), but my callback functions for EVT_UPDATE_UI never get called. Can anyone explain how to use EVT_UPDATE_UI() properly to update a menu item in wxPython (or suggest another way to solve this problem)? Thanks, Jonathan

Python equivalent of C++'s virtual destructors?

I have a class which has to do cleanup when it goes out of scope (and so has a __del__ method), but which is also going to be derived and its subclasses may also need to do class-specific things on destruction as well. What is the accepted way of handling this situation? The solution which presents itself most easily is simply to explicitly call the destructor of the base class in the derived class: class Base: def __del__(self): print "in base destructor" class Derived(Base): def __del__(self): print "in derived destructor" Base.__del__(self) d = Derived() d = None However, I distinctly recall reading somewhere that explicitly calling a __del__ method for a class is a big no-no. Error while starting Zope server on Linux?

Hi! I have installed the Zope-2.2.0-src on my S.U.S.E 6.4 Linux box. smtplib and Python 1.5.1

Hello! I have been trying to create a Python CGI that sends a mail to notify me that it has ben activated and I have some problems with the smtplib! My ISP has Pyton 1.5.1 installed. After 2 days reading code and RFC's and debugging and ... I have come to this: All my code is working (YES!!!) The error is that the smtplib.sendmail does not end the message data correctly! Instead of sending '\015\012.\015\012' it sends '\012.\012' which makes the SMTP server to wait forever (or till timeout) Is this a bug in 1.5.1? or is it something the person that installed Python has done? or ... How do I fix this? // Anders

transactions and MS SQL Server 7.0

Hi there, I'm using the dbi and odbc modules from the Win32 extensions to connect to MS SQL Server 7.0. It works ok but I need to turn on transactions. Is there a way to do it? Is there a better way to connect to the database? I'd like to find a better way to connect as there are some problems with the win32 odbc module. Any suggestions? No exception for "error: host not found"

I feel this is really bad for not catching this exception in the Socket library. Does anyone know how to catch this error outside of the socket libarary? Thanks Sam
