How to get the os.system data into a variable

Hi all! I know that t = os.system('ls -l') return code and assigns it to t. I would like to get the data, not the code, that is resulted from the command into a variable. (i.e. -rw-r--r-- 1 root other 821 Dec 2 12:20 MyLog.txt drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 512 Dec 21 1999 TT_DB drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 512 Aug 18 17:05 apps lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Dec 20 1999 bin -> ./usr/bin drwxr-xr-x 3 root nobody 512 Nov 28 12:31 cdrom drwxr-xr-x 2 root other 512 Nov 21 20:10 cgi-bin -rw------- 1 root root 975040 Oct 3 11:34 core etc.) I know that I could do t = os.system('ls -l > mytemp.txt') and then read the file, but I would like to acquire that data w/o reading the file. Oh, and by the way, the command that I am sending is not really ls. It does not even belong to the unix world. It's the output of a command from an application that I have. Any ideas? Simple threaded web-server based on BaseHTTPServer?

Can anybody show me how to create a threaded web-server based on BaseHTTPServer? And if anybody has an opinion about it's ok performance wise to base a Threaded-webserver on BaseHTTPServer or go for Medusa? What does Medusa offer over the threaded BaseHTTPServer? Performance? Features? Is it possible to create a encrypted server using SSL with BaseHTTPServer? To summerize : I need a *stable* web-server solution that can implement encryption ( probably do that later ) with reasonable performance to serve content using in-memory objects ( nothing will be read from physical files, but created from in-memory templates populated with data from business-objects). That latest bit is important; the content I'm serving is stored in objects which takes some time to load so keeping them in memory is vital for performance. BaseHTTPServer seems very easy to use so why go for Medusa which seem to be a bit more complicated? Medusa has also been a bit unstable when hit with concurrent users and creating threaded-requesthandlers with it seem hard. Any pointers to articles, web-pages etc. appreciated. Thomas W

Python Books Galore

Two years ago, the Boston University bookstore had only one Python book. I went back yesterday and found a full row (3 1/2 to 4 feet) filled with Python books. They were still in a section called "Other Programming Languages" but it is only a matter of time before it gets its own section label. This has got to be a good sign. Raymond

proxy authentication: how to hide password

Hi, Python community. I'm using Python 2.2 on Win2k. We have a firewall in our organization, so I need to connect to the Internet via proxy from my .py scripts. So I use the following lines: proxy=urllib2.ProxyHandler({'http':'http://login:passwd@10.10.10.11:80'}) opener=urllib2.build_opener(proxy) urllib2.install_opener(opener) f = urllib2.urlopen(url-to-retrieve) where login and passwd are my Windows login and password. Everything works OK, but obviously there are some problems: - my password is stored in my script as a simple text; - I need to change my scripts regularly to correct the password; - my colleagues can't use the same script - they should change the login and password their. My IT department says it possible to use WinSock without necessity to provide any authorizations but it's not clear for us how. Does anybody have any idea?

Just for fun !! Friend of mine who used to work with lisp (and is a bit interested in Python) asked me how compact I could write a program to evaluate the number of possible combinations a set of characters (string) can be written in - handling two identical characters as different characters. Example: "ab" --> yields 2 ("ab", "ba") "abc" --> yields 6 "aa" --> yields 2 My Python answer shown below. Better solutions ? AttributeError: 'getopt' module has no attribute 'GetoptError'

I use Python 2.1 on Win98. Try to use the getopt module, but get the error in the subject line. What's wrong? My code: try: opts, args = getopt.getopt(sys.argv[1:], 'f:hcr') except getopt.GetoptError: usage() sys.exit(2) Another question about getopt: Are options optional by nature?
