You're still distributing C linked in with A. A derives from C. The key difference is that their shim uses the standard kernel API to talk with the binary-only drivers in much the same way that a proprietary, binary-only application uses the standard kernel API. Using the standard kernel API is considered (at least by Linus; see COPYING in the Linux kernel distribution) to be *use* of the Linux kernel and thus unrestricted and not creating a derivative work. PIL JPEG Windows Problem

If nobody has a quick answer I'll go to the PIL list, but I'm having problems with PIL JPEG support on Windows, and figured someone on c.l.py might have solved this problem. I built the Cygwin PIL from source, and that works a treat. Unfortunately the Windows version (1.1.4 and 1.1.5b1) loaded using binary installers is giving File "/c/steve/website/hpgraphics.py", line 23, in ? File "C:\Python23\Lib\site-packages\PIL\ImageFont.py", line 115, in ? class FreeTypeFont: File "C:\Python23\Lib\site-packages\PIL\ImageFont.py", line 132, in FreeTypeFont def getmask(self, text, mode="", fill=Image.core.fill): File "C:\Python23\Lib\site-packages\PIL\Image.py", line 45, in __getattr__ raise ImportError("The _imaging C module is not installed") ImportError: The _imaging C module is not installed When I import the _imaging module directly a dialog box informs me that libjpeg.dll can't be found, and I have confirmed that it isn't anywhere on the disk - I have a libjpeg.dll.a as part of cygwin, but I can't persuade myself this can be munged into suitable form. It would be nice if I were wrong ... ReportLab newbie

I'm trying this script with reportlab: from reportlab.pdfbase import pdfmetrics from reportlab.pdfbase.ttfonts import TTFont fontname = 'Arial-Bold' my_TTF = '/opt/Fonts/arial.ttf' font = TTFont(fontname, my_TTF) pdfmetrics.registerFont(font) But the register complains with this exception: ValueError: _tt2ps_map[('arial', 1, 0)]==Arial-Bold already, not Arial what does it mean? -- damjan

Unicode encoding is 'iso10646-1', so do xlsfonts -fn '*iso10646*' to see what unicode fonts you have in the first place. Adding -lll will list metrics for each character, so do (for example) xlsfonts -lll -fn '*iso10646*' | grep 0x17f to see all the metrics for LATIN SMALL LETTER LONG S. If any of these have non-zero metrics, the character is available. Inspect the full output to find the complete font name, and use 'xfd' to display the font. On my system, for example, all *misc* fonts have this character, but the *helvetica* fonts don't. Finally, you have to make sure Tk uses the fonts. IIRC Tkinter allows you to access the Tk option database, so set the font options with X-style names. Cached where? The DNS server you're querying probably caches the results, but the resolver library the program uses might or might not -- different systems behave differently. Hi Skip, This is very much appreciated. I certainly understand the fishing concept. I'm probably like many others here in that I have no formal computer training. (I used to be a plumber :) I think I've downloaded .... and more to the point read .... most of the major help files but with this last one I was truly stuck. Now going to go through your and Josiah's answers in greater depth. Again my sincere thanks to you both. Phil
