Compiled bytecode

This may be a dumb question, but are there any practical advantages of compiling a python application to *.pyo, or *.pyc? I haven't noticed any difference in the performance of text *.py or a bytecompiled file.

A good use of threads is to improve responsiveness of a system. It won't make the computation complete any faster (in fact it will probably be slower), but the user will remain happier. Similarly network applications are usually multi-threaded so that all requests get a fair chance to complete instead of having to wait for the slowest to complete before others can run. If you do have multiple processors available and want to speed up a Python program then you probably have to look at multiple processes rather than multiple threads. Alternatively you could move parts of the processing out of the Python environment by rewriting inner loops in C and releasing the interpreter lock, but that isn't usually the best option.

Features for a Python package manager?

Hello c.l.py, what features would you expect of a Python package manager, similar to CPAN or rubygems? I am currently planning to write such a thing, at first privately for myself, and if it's proving useful, I think about releasing it. I plan to model it after gentoo's portage, with less features of course. Would this be acceptable? feel-free-to-comment-ly yours, Georg
