Java has almost no helper classes. These are things that don't REQUIRE to be there but are there for convenience. Check the recent talk by Bruce Eckel (http://video.haas.berkeley.edu:24874/ramgen/media-services/Eckel6-25-04.rm). I don't think any of his criticism applies for C#. 3.) A sensible, easy to use GUI library (even if it isn't very portable). 4.) IO doesn't require me look up the manuals each time to figure out which 3 or so classes I need this time. 5.) Excellent performance (Not just on paper). 6.) Easy deployment. 7.) Absolutely the best web development framework (OK! I may be getting a bit religious here but I love the component and event driven model. JFaces as I looked at it was not very mature). 8.) Community that does think that it has to use every single design pattern in every single library. 9.) An IDE that actually feels simple. 10.) DESIGNED for multiple languages (I admit I rediculed this till recently saying that all languages needed needed to be like C# to be supported and it was no better than Java in this. But with IronPython and F#, it looks a bit promising. But I need them to be integrated into Visual Studio for me to love them.) 11.) Distributed computing for mere mortals. EJB maybe better designed than COM+ and more portable. But something must be wrong about it's design that it scares me away each time. 12.) I hate MVC (OK! It is not Java's fault that every Java programmer wants it). I am actually looking forward to IronPython a lot. Has anyone figured out how to build a .NET assembly out of it? I just looked at it for a few minutes. I couldn't get UtilLibraryBuilder to work. Maybe it was just me.

Perhaps this would be useful as a teaching tool for first year programming courses, helping students to visualize what the various statements do. Such things seem trivial once they are ingrained in one's thinking, but getting that initial comprehension may be more challenging than one remembers, and the flowchart just might help out. It does seem to add some visual complexity, however, which might not be an advantage for more experienced programmers... Conspiracy theories of Nick Berg being alive and well in Iraq have today been proven true. Aljazeera have released video footage of the supposedly beheaded American captive. The clip was first "discovered" on an Islamic website in Malaysia and has now been released by American Journalists collaborating with Aljazeera. Returning another instance from constructor

Is there a way in Python to have the constructor of a class "return" another instance of the same class ? I am well aware of the fact that __init__ does not return anything, but I would love to do something like this: class X(object): def __init__(self,...other parameters): # some magic code x = X() y = X() and have y actually referencing x automatically. Of course I am aware that if X is passed an optional parameter of type X in its constructor, it can forward all its member functions to that other X. But I am looking for something even more magical. I thought that maybe I could do such magic using metaclasses, but metaclasses only create classes and not class instances, so I do not see how. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear it.

How to import X from Python library when X is defined in a package

OK, here's the setup: package/ __init__.py X.py python/lib/ X.py Now inside package, we want to import the copy of X.py defined in python/lib/. In C one would do #include <X> In Python, the easiest solution is: Make a subpackage called pylibs package/ __init__.py X.py pylibs/ __init__.py In package/pylibs/__init__.py, do import X. Then to get X from within package, just do import package.pylibs.X The more obvious solutions (such as doing sys.path.reverse(); import X; sys.path.reverse() inside the package) do not work, because Python ignores sys.path when inside a package (ie it always looks in the package directory even when told explicitly not to). Proctitle 0.0.2 has been released. It fixes a None deallocation bug that appeared in in newer Python's, (Uhm...Newer then 2 years ago. : P) and includes a new slideback() method and shorthand function, for easier removal of Argv[0]. IE: import proctitle proctitle.slideback() # 'python' is no more in the `ps` output! Comments within a line

Has there ever been any discussion of adding comments notation to Python, such as C++'s /* */, which could occur in the middle of a line or span multiple lines ? I would like to see it as a more elegant solution for quickly commenting out code. I am aware of the """ """ technique around multiple lines but even that seems a poor hack. A comment that could enclose any sequence of characters would be most welcome.
