Turn of globals in a function?

Is there a way to hide global names from a function or class? I want to be sure that a function doesn't use any global variables by mistake. So hiding them would force a name error in the case that I omit an initialization step. This might be a good way to quickly catch some hard to find, but easy to fix, errors in large code blocks. Examples: def a(x): # ... x = y # x is assigned to global y unintentionally. # ... return x def b(x): # hide globals somehow # ... x = y # Cause a name error # ... return x y = True >>>a(False): True >>>b(False): *** name error here *** Ron_Adam

returning a list: IndexError

Hello, I am getting the following error when returning a list: return tbl[c1,c2] "IndexError: each subindex must be either a slice, an integer, Ellipsis, or NewAxis" What does it mean? Here's the code snippet.... from Numeric import * # Initialize the 32x16 global array to zeros tbl = zeros((32, 16) def getValue( value): data = test(value) c1 = data[0] c2 = data[1] print tbl[c1, c2] def test( value): t1 = 0x0 t2 = 0x1 return tbl[t1, t2] Thanks, -SB

A question about the use of PyArg_Parse function

Hi, I hope I'm writing to the right place. In case I'm out of place can you please refer to the right direction. I have a question about the correct way to use PyArg_Parse API function. I'm writing a C module to be called from python code (ver 2.3.4) In one of the function I have to cast the parameter into char * It looks like this: PyObject* myfunc (PyObject *self, PyObject *args) { char * myparam; if (!PyArg_Parse(args, "(s)", &myparam)){ ..... } ... } I have a few questions: 1. is this the correct way to cast PyObject into char* I have tried the PyArg_ParseTuple but for some reason didn't succeed. 2. Is the pointer above (&myparam) is alocated by this call? ( I guess it is since the adress changed before and after the call) 3. Who is releasing this memory ? I tried looking into the code , and will continue to. I just debugged a soap request using apache axis tcpmon - you can run that as a proxy and it will monitor the connection. I'm not entirely sure how urllib handles proxies, but I suppose you can use the common environment variables. So fire up tcpmon, make a browser request over it and an urllib-based and compare the results. -- Regards, Diez B. Roggisch

PyParsing module or HTMLParser

I came across pyparsing module by Paul McGuire. It seems to be nice but I am not sure if it is the best for my need. I need to extract some text from html page. The text is in tables and a table can be inside another table. Is it better and easier to use the pyparsing module or HTMLparser? Thanks for suggestions. La.

urllib problem (maybe bugs?)

Hi, I'm trying to fill the form on page http://www.cbs.dtu.dk/services/TMHMM/ using urllib. There are two peculiarities. First of all, I am filling in incorrect key/value pairs in the parameters on purpose because that's the only way I can get it to work.. For "version" I am suppose to leave it unchecked, having value of empty string. And for name "outform" I am suppose to assign it a value of "-short". Instead, I left out "outform" all together and fill in "-short" for version. I discovered the method my accident. After I've done that it works fine for small SEQ values. Then, when I try to send large amount of data (1.4MB), it fails miserably with AttributeError exception. I highly suspect the two problems I have are the result of some bugs in the urllib module. Any suggestions? There are dozens of ways of interpreting your code and your request, and it's impossible to guess exactly which you meant. For example, it seems like you might have meant to say "will the thread be executed" instead of "exited", but I'm not sure. And you don't show the imports you used, so nobody can tell for sure whether you are referring to the "threading" module and the "timer" module, or just to threading and maybe timers in general. wxPython, for example, also has a timer object. More importantly, your code can't be executed, so we're just shooting in the dark if we try to figure out how you are getting "someTimerEvent" to execute, if indeed it is a function. The "def" statements don't have colons after them, so we're not even sure you are asking about how to do something, or perhaps you have code that is just not compiling because it is syntactically incorrect. In a nutshell, do the most you possibly can to help us out, and you'll get timely and effective help. Otherwise you may get silence, and "pleaseee" will just sound like whining. I think you may find Alex Martelli's PyCon slides somewhere on the net. The black magic slides discuss this issue. But I think the fix he suggests is not dissimilar from what you are already doing. I don't remember exactly now, but it is always worth a look. Michele Simionato
