Just curious if anybody prefers web2py over django, and visa versa. I know it's been discussed on a flame war level a lot. I am looking for a more intellectual reasoning behind using one or the other.

TkTable and Python 3.1

HI All, I'm fiddling around with Python and I'm trying to get tktable to work with Python 3.1 on Apple OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Has anyone successfully accomplished this task, and if so, can you share how that you got it working? I've got Darwin Ports installed (current version) and I'm using Python 3.1 (ports), Tcl/Tk 8.5 (ports) and I've installed TkTable 2.10 (ports). Somehow, I've missed doing something because the Python interpreter can't seem to find the tktable module. Thanks in advance! Chuck

Hello, I'm trying to get Python 3.1 and cx_Oracle 5.02 (cx_Oracle-5.0.2-10g.win32-py3.0.msi) to connect to an Oracle 11.1.0.7.0 database via OraClient10g 10.2.0.3.0 with Pydev 1.5.1.1258496115 in Eclipse 20090920-1017 on Windows XP SP 3 v2002. The import cx_Oracle line appears as an unresolved import and when I run the application I get the following error to console: Traceback (most recent call last): File "FILEPATHHERE", line 1, in <module> import cx_Oracle ImportError: DLL load failed: The specified module could not be found. Apparently the error is caused by cx_Oracle not being able to find the Oracle client DLLs (oci.dll and others). The client home path and the client home path bin directory are in the PATH System Variable and oci.dll is there. I tried getting the Oracle Instant Client (instantclient-basic- win32-11.1.0.7.0.zip from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/win…) and installing it as directed. I added the instant client path to the PATH System Variable but that didn't work either. I have scoured the internet and have not found a solution. Please help!

I've got a subclass of fractions.Fraction called Value; it's a mostly trivial class, except that it overrides __eq__ to mean 'nearly equal'. However, since Fraction's operations result in a Fraction, not a Value, I end up with stuff like this: x = Value(1) + Value(2) where x is now a Fraction, not a Value, and x == y uses Fraction.__eq__ rather than Value.__eq__. This appears to be standard Python behavior (int does the same thing). I've worked around it by overriding __add__, etc, with functions that invoke Fraction but coerce the result. But that's tedious; there are a lot of methods to override. So I'm wondering: is there a more efficient way to accomplish what I'm after?

newbie qns : how do i use xmldiff?

Hi , I am pretty new to python , and reading up on it. Basically I am trying to compare xml files . I know difflib have it but it does not work out as expected. I was looking at xmldiff , unfortunately I am not able to find documentation how to call it from python. Anyone knows a link or doc to it as I have been looking high and low for few days? lastly , is there a py (or algorithm) where it behaves exactly like diff ? Greatly appreciated. Thanks john

A question about the posibility of raise-yield in Python

I'm writing this as a complete newbie (on the issue), so don't be surprised if it's the stupidest idea ever. I was wondering if there was ever a discusision in the python community on a 'raise-yield' kind-of combined expression. I'd like to know if it was proposed/rejected/discussed/not-decided yet?? A 'raise-yield' expression would break the flow of a program just like an exception, going up the call stack until it would be handled, but also like yield it would be possible to continue the flow of the program from where it was raise-yield-ed. This would be usefull for example in event based frameworks, they could just replace socket.* and similar, normally blocking, modules/functions with it's own 'raise-yield' enabled ones. Then you could just take any normal imperative code that calls normal library networking code (say smtplib, poplib or httplib) nad run it in a event framework. The normal xxxlib calls at some point would get to the now non-blocking, event based socket write/read, break the flow back to the event framework, and when it finishes the event framework would continue the normal flow of the program past the raise-yield. -- дамјан ((( http://damjan.softver.org.mk/ ))) When you do things right, people won't be sure if you did anything at all.

In fact, I still loan it to any friends who are just starting out with Python and want to do their first GUI. Besides, the book is mainly about using Python with Tkinter - and Tkinter hasn't changed that much since 2000, so I believe it is just as relevant today as it was back then. The fact it was written back when Python was 1.52 is probably not relevant either as it isn't a book about learning Python (all such books quickly become 'dated' given the speed at which Python develops) but rather producing GUIs using Python and Tkinter - so it still does an excellent job for that even though I have abandoned the GUI application framework that John provides in his book (I used it once for my first GUI, but these days use Pmw more for my GUIs).
