I am pleased to announce the first stable release of obfuscate, version 0.2.2. http://pypi.python.org/pypi/obfuscate/ obfuscate is a pure-Python module providing classical encryption algorithms suitable for obfuscating and unobfuscating text. This is a maintenance release of back-end and API changes but no new ciphers. This should be considered the first stable API for obfuscate. obfuscate includes the following ciphers: - rot13, rot5, rot18, rot47 - atbash - Caesar cipher - Keyword - Affine - Playfair, Playfair6, Playfair16 - frob (xor) - Vigenere - RailFence - plus others. DISCLAIMER: obfuscate is not cryptographically strong, and should not be used where high security is required. obfuscate is released under the MIT licence. Requires Python 2.5 or 2.6. -- Steven

What use of string module?

Hi, I read the online help about string. It lists string constants, string formatting, template strings and string functions. After reading these, I am still puzzled about how to use the string module. Could you show me a few example about this module? Thanks

Best way to insert sorted in a list

There are basically two ways to go about this. One is, to append the new value, and then sort the list. Another is to traverse the list, and insert the new value at the appropriate position. The second one's complexity is O(N), while the first one's is O(N * log N). Still, the second one works much better, because C code is being used instead of pythons. Still, being a programmer, using the first way (a.insert(x); a.sort()), does not feel right. What has the community to say about this ? What is the best (fastest) way to insert sorted in a list ?

Hello, do you know of any way to copy locked / opened files under win xp? I know there is something like "Volume Shadow Copy" but I don't know how to use it. Maybe someone already has a python solution? Many thanks Daniel

This is an idea I've had bouncing around in my head for a long time now. I propose the following syntax: return? expr be expanded to _temp = expr if _temp: return _temp It's a pattern I use all the time in my code, and although it's a bit unorthodox, IMO it's concise, readable, and easily understandable. Thoughts?

Passing arguments to & executing, a python script on a remote machine from a python script on local machine (using ssh ?)

Hi c.l.p folks Here is my situation 1. I have two machines. Lets call them 'local' & 'remote'. Both run ubuntu & both have python installed 2. I have a python script, local.py, running on 'local' which needs to pass arguments ( 3/4 string arguments, containing whitespaces like spaces, etc ) to a python script, remote.py running on 'remote' (the remote machine). I have the following questions: 1. What's the best way to accomplish my task ? I have researched quite a bit & pretty much everybody is using ssh. After googling a bunch, most people are using very complex workarounds to do this sort of thing. I googled & found people using several libraries to accomplish ssh to remote machine & execute a command on remote machine. paramiko ( now forked into the ssh moduke), fabric, pushy ,etc People who have used any of these libraries, which one would you recommend, as the most apt (simple & easy to use, lightweight, best performance, etc) for my situation ? 2. I would prefer a solution, which does NOT require the installation of extra libraries on the local & remote machines. If installing external librar 3. I tried this >>> import os >>> os.system ("ssh remoteuser@remote python remote.py arg1 arg2 arg3") This worked, but if the arguments i tried to pass, had spaces, i was not able to 'escape' the spaces.
