Hi, I see pointers to Python appearing on Apple's OS X downloads page: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_apps_utilities/ These are the two entries: 1 MacPython 2.1.1. (Jack Jansen, 1.1 MB) MacPython is the port of Guido van Rossum's Python high-level object-oriented language, including an IDE and access to native functionality. MacPython is the port of Guido van Rossum's Python high-level object-oriented language to the Mac. Python is freely distri- butable and available in source form too. Aside from the nu- merous extension modules available on most platforms (include the Tk windowing toolkit, sockets and many others) MacPython has a number of extension modules specifically for Mac OS. MacPython programmers have access to QuickDraw, QuickTime, the Sound manager and various third party toolkits like In- ternet Config and Waste, to name but a few. Also included is an integrated development environment by Just van Rossum, which includes an editor, debugger and class brow- ser all closely integrated. The full distributions below contain examples and some docu- mentation on Mac-specific aspects of using Python. Especially Tcl/Tk is an (absent) issue. Would it be possible to unite the two entries under the same (web) hood (or cross-link them if they aren't already) and offer two (identical) packages for download, one compiled and one not? But: I vaguely remember that 1.5.2 had some serious problems with Tkinter. You might want to check the archives for pythonmac-sig from late 1999 to mid 2000 looking for messages with "tk" in the subject. How do I install Tkinter on 7.5.3

Silly MacOS X question...

Hi, Just installed MacOS X and trying to change file permissions within the folder where Apache CGI files are, *but* my own machine won't let me (that folder is owned by 'root'). How does one change files that are owned by root? This does apply to the list since I'm working on a Python-based project using Webware. :-) Which brings me to my next question, how does one install things like Webware and MySQL on MacOS X so that it is run as root and/or is accessible by all users of the machine? And, one more X-novice question: where/what is the file that specifies where to run applications from the terminal, i.e. "python thisScript.py" execute the script using python. Or, better yet, "./thisScript.py" where the first line would read something like "#!/usr/local/bin/python". I can't access most of the folders in /usr since I'm not 'root'. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks, Tracy

Python, MacOSX and Gnuplot.

Hello all. With multiple incarnations of Python (MacPython and python via fink) and Gnuplot (homepage.mac.com/gnuplot) and gnuplot via fink, I have a question: Is it possible to call the Aqua version of Gnuplot (as opposed to the Unix X-windowing fink version) from Python (either MacPython or fink)? Well....? Tkinter question....

Folks, I admit it, I'm not a very good person with Tkinter... Does anyone feel up to giving me a slight hand, with a Tkinter Dialog? I'm attempting to figure out how to create a "tri-list", with a "use" button... i.e. option1 option a option ! option2 option b option @ option3 option c option # option4 option d option $ >>use<< <<quit>> When use is clicked, the values are returned, a small routine is run, and it's returned back to the trilist function... I'm not sure of the easiest, or best way....to create this... I briefly examined PMW a while back on the PC.... But I'm not sure it's suitable for MacPython.... (And I never really did get the hang of PMW)... Anyone have something similiar that I can use as a starting point (well, learning example)....Or suggestions on a straight forward way to create this? - Benjamin

I would expect a factor of 2, maybe less. Which Python version were you using? As of 2.2b2 the whole event code has changed rather significantly. I did the measurements: You are right, I was wrong. Sorry. I seem to have misinterpreted my experiments of some months ago. By the way, I've got a question concerning the PythonInterpreter implementation: Why is file copying by orders of magnitude faster when the program is run in the IDE rather than the interpreter? (I just made a little test that copied 100 files from local hard disk to local hard disk (total 30 MB, size ranging from 232 KB to 492 KB): 25 s vs. 45 min!) I guess that some calls to ::WaitNextEvent() cannot explain this dramatic difference.
