Speed issues with Applet/Applications?

Hi, I wrote a script which allows me to decompress from a .ZIP file, and appropriately sizing names of files that are longer than 31 characters. However the problem I am encountering, is that when I run the script in the Python IDE, it runs at full speed. When I run the script as a standalone application or applet, then it runs VERY SLOW! I am using Python 2.1, and I am using running this script on a PowerG4. So I am wondering if someone else has had this problem when using the application or applet, and/or if there is a good solution to this problem.

Building mxDateTime for Python 2.0

I am trying to re-compile the mxDateTime shared library to let me use DateTime in Python 2.0 -- the shared library provided throws exception on import about using the wrong version. I have never compiled any type of shared library before, so girding my loins and firing up CW 5 I set up a shared library project and: 1. included the mxDateTime.c code 2. included stub libraries PythonCore and MSL ShLibRuntime.Lib Result: -- Link failure, could not find function 'floor' I knew this is a standard C function, so I threw the stub MathLib into the pot and cooked. Got a bunch of warnings about duplicate definitions of math functions (in PythonCore and MathLib). Decided to ignore warnings. Successfully made the shared library, successfully imported DateTime into Python 2.0 (actually 2.0b1). However, the test script for mxDateTime failed an assertion. Basically, a function DateTimeFromTicks, which uses the floor function, fails to give predicted results. My question: Am I including the correct library in my project to get the "right" version of floor? Thanks, Vince Marchetti

Scott, I have no idea what is causing your problems. They also seem to be unique (i.e. if anyone else sees something similar: please speak up!). Some wild guesses: - are you using Multiple Users? I've never tried this, and it could well make the install fail. Is anyone else using Multiple Users? - Are you running some virus-catching software that could cause this? - Running off a fileserver maybe, so Python has no permission to save the prefs file? - "Funny" (non-ascii) characters in your diskname? In the path to Python? Some other info that would be interesting: - Does the prefs file actually exist or is Python somhow only thinking that it exists? - Your Apple System Profile output could be handy. The second Apple Menu in the IDE, by the way, means that the IDE has crashed. Unfortunately this means you can't easily find out why it did so. This install gave me the same problems on my G3 running OS 9.1 that I had with 2.1. During the install I get a dialog prompt warning me of a preexisting preference file in the system folder. (This file didn't exist when I installed 2.1 and I trashed it when I installed 2.1.1) The dialog box gives you the option of continuing or quitting and rerunning configurecarbon. If I continue, the install appears to finish correctly. However, when running the IDE a second apple menu appears. When quitting the IDE the menu bar becomes filled with gibberish and then the finder crashes. If I choose to quit the install and rerun configurecarbon, the finder crashes. After reboot and running the IDE, it experiences the same menu bar/finder crash explained above. With both 2.1 and 2.1.1 I have completely removed the classic/carbon install and did a custom install of classic only and it works fine.

I think this was the very first MacPython extension module I wrote, basically to learn the process (back in the days when Guido himself still did MacPython maintainance). I'm not sure when it was written, but the initial checkin is from october 1994. So it predates the toolbox modules by half a year or so. Darwin Python: how to enable zlib?

I've just succesfully compiled and installed Python under Darwin once again, but zlib has not been built. Do I have to install the zlib sources? I thought they came with the OSX dev tools, but I'mnot sure. Does anyone know the magic incantations? Thanks. Just
