dlcompat and readline

When building MacPython from CVS I always have to mask fink (by renaming /sw to /sw.tmp), otherwise the Python configure tries to build both the readline and dl modules (and fails on both). Doesn't seem to be harmful but leaves annoying messages in the make log. I had installed it in my copy of fink python with no trouble, but the cgi scripts were using the wrong sys.path and therefore not finding it. The solution is to set PYTHONPATH in your apache configuration. Here's how I did it: * First, in /etc/httpd/httpd.conf, enable mod_env by uncommenting the following two lines: LoadModule env_module libexec/httpd/mod_env.so [at around line 200] AddModule mod_env.c [around line 250] (You may note when you do this that the module mod_setenvif is already enabled. I don't know why it is while mod_env is not. Perhaps someone who knows more about apache would have some insight.) * The second step is more variable. The meat of it is that, in an appropriate place, put this directive: SetEnv PYTHONPATH "/sw/lib/python2.2:/sw/lib/python-2.2/plat-darwin:/sw/lib/ python2.2/lib-dynload:/sw/lib/python2.2/site-packages" (All on one line.) What "an appropriate place" means depends on your particular situation. In my case, I only needed python+CGI+PgSQL to work for one user account, so I put it in the Directory block in /etc/httpd/users/username.conf . I imagine you could also put it in the Directory block for the web root (in httpd.conf) or in a .htaccess file in your CGI directory. * Restart the apache service for these changes to take effect. So confused! MacPython-OSX 2.3a1, 2.4?

I was excited to see mentioned on Jack's page that there was a MacPython-OSX 2.3a1 that includes basically everything (IDE, etc). Unfortunately, there is no link or instructions for installing it. I downloaded the OS9 version and it says to download the OSX version from source and use frameworks, but that is a little over my head without some elaboration on instructions. I then found on this list a mention of a binary on the sourceforge pages. Unfortunately, I found no binary for MacPython-OSX 2.3a1. Instead I found lots of 2.4 stuff including wxPython. I have no idea what that is. I'm assuming that these are the developmental branches. Can someone please help me out with how to proceed? I've been waiting for an OSX version of Python with an IDE that also works with the command line. I'm just getting started and it has been quite frustrating wading through all of these different versions without a clue where to start. thanks, Kurt

Does the dl module serve a useful purpose on MacOSX?

Folks, does anyone know whether the dl module serves a useful purpose on MacOSX? Somehow fink installed dlfcn.h and libdl.a, and when building Python the main setup.py picks up dlfcn.h but not libdl.a. I either have to add logic to find the latter too, or I have to disable the dl module on MacOSX. I want to do database work, a little crypto for the math, general internet programing. Are there any books that would fulfill my needs? Can you do 3d graphics with the opengl lib if so where do I begin? I was learning opengl on X windows in C until my Linux machine was stolen. By the way what does everyone do with python? What kind of things do you do with it daily? A motion to adjourn is always in order.

Installing mysql-python

I am running the Python 2.2.2 binary installation from fink under OS X 10.2.3 I have also succesfully installed Mysql using fink. I've been running into problems in installing the mysql-python package from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mysql-python/ When I try to build > python setup.py build gcc -L/sw/lib -bundle -bundle_loader /sw/bin/python build/temp.darwin-6.3-PowerMacintosh-2.2/_mysql.o -L/sw/lib/mysql -L/sw/lib -L/sw/lib -lmysqlclient -lz -o build/lib.darwin-6.3-PowerMacintosh-2.2/_mysql.so -flat_namespace ld: can't locate file for: -lmysqlclient error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1 I looked through google, sourceforge, and this list and a lot of people seem to have hit this problem but no one seems to have posted the solution. I can't figure out where the problem is. Is it because the libmysqlclient.a library is missing ? or do I have some compiler flags missing that would use the dylib file instead ? I am confused. CVS building problem

The latest CVS version, combined with the latest Tcl/Tk CVS version, gives me problems. Something goes wrong when building tkinter (and of course as a consequence most of the stuff in /Applications does not work either). Tkinter application, duplicate 'Help' menu

Hello, I have written an application in Python using Tkinter on OS X 10.2, but because I need to put a 'Help' menu in the menubar, I end up with two 'Help's because Tk adds a blank entry there when I start the program. Is there any way I can remove it or use it? Thanks, Ivan

Jaguar ships with Python 2.2 built in. It appears that your python installation is completely hosed. I suggest you blow away everything even remotely related to Python that you installed in pre-OS X 10.2 and start over. Jaguar's python is in /usr/bin/python, /usr/lib/python2.2, and /usr/include/python*. Blow everything else away, including your environment variables. If the built-in Jaguar fits the bill, stick with it. If you need more modules, etc, go with Fink or MacPython (the framework build). b.bum
