Commercial quality, |reasonably priced, high-levels of support and learning resources. A |GUI builder which is optional and based on TKinter. |Coming from a background of using high quality, productive and |efficient IDEs, Komodo makes the switch to Python very appealing. |Boa Constructor looks like a decent option as well. Certainly better |than anything available on Mac, but it doesn't hold a candle to |Komodo. I agree with you about Komodo. I wish it were available on OS X. The Mac is a big void for ActiveState. There have been periodic requests for a Mac port, but apparently they are concerned about a) the commercial viability of such an effort and b) some considerable technical hurdles surrounding their text component (Scintilla) which has not been fully ported to the Mac. Boa Contructor is not usable except with an obsolete version of wxPython (2.4.x), it has not been updated in two years, and so I have never been able to give it a real try. |That's true, but like everything else related to Python on OSX, it |looks like a clumsy assembly process involving several separate |programs and licenses, and is more difficult to maintain, in addition |to being fairly (though not prohibitively) expensive. Not to mention |the fact that QT carries with it a ton of baggage which is not |required for Python development, and Black Adder (while attractive and |appealing) is not available for OSX (but it is for Linux and Windows) |nor can it build for OSX. I maintain a binary installer of PyQt for the Mac, and I'm about to update it to the latest version of everything. However, it's GPL'ed, and would not be a viable tool for commercial development. Does TrollTech provide binary installers for commercial users? |In the past, I've snubbed any tool which did not allow me to work in |OSX, but Python is important to my plans... enough so that I'll switch |my development OS to have a decent, high-quality toolkit and IDE, |preferably a commercial one, with help files, support, and yes, a GUI |builder for those times when a native interface is required. One thing to keep in mind with Komodo is that while it has a GUI builder, I believe it only supports Tk/Tkinter. That's not surprising, given that ActiveState's bread and butter is Tcl. I myself like Tk, but I also develop in Tcl: I'm learning Python as a way into the more comprehensive GUI toolkits that it supports. (To me Tkinter just looks like a weird mangling of Tk code, and doesn't interest me.) In other words, if you want a commercial GUI builder for something other than Tk, you're back to wxDesigner or Black Adder/Qt. Or, coding the stuff by hand in Komodo. But if you're moving to Linux, Black Adder might be a good route. (Assuming theKompany doesn't go belly up in the interim...) Anyway, thanks for the discussion. I found it very intriguing. What xplat GUI building tools and IDE are available on Linux that are *not* available on OS X? I realize WingIDE may satisfy the IDE part of this, but what about the GUI part? The free/open-source tools that I package are also the main ones that are available on Linux. They may run more smoothly there, but they're pretty much the same. 2. Did you look at PyQt at all? I have trouble believing that Qt, and especially Qt Designer, would *not* satisfy your criteria for commercial-quality tools. Of course, Qt isn't cheap for commercial development, and perhaps that's an issue, but I think it should satisfy your critiera for high-quality, well-supported tools. Trouble installing mxdatetime

Hi, I was attempting to install mxdatetime on a mac mini - but it fails when I run setup. Repeated messages tell me it was unable to execute gcc. I unzipped the release in a temp folder and ran: sudo python setup.py install Advice appreciated. J

Matplotlib warning means what?

I've been tooling around with matplotlib, as graciously packaged by Chris Barker, and hosted on Bob Ippolito's pythonmac.org/packages site. Everything seems to be working smoothly, but I've run into a couple of warnings I can't decrypt. 1) Executing the following code, #! /usr/bin/pythonw import pylab pylab.plot([1, 2, 3], [4, 5, 6]) pylab.show() displays a chart as expected (the toolbar icons are a little mucked, but that's minor). However, dismissing the chart window brings up this warning: 2005-03-12 17:26:52.075 Python[569] *** _NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x66402d0 of class NSCFString autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking *** malloc[569]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x66c73d0; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug Is this a bug with matplotlib, with my installation of matplotlib, or with my script? Can I ignore it, and if not, what can I do to address it? 2) a smaller issue: I tried to change matplotlib's array class by opening /system/library/frameworks/python.framework/version/2.3/share/ .matplotlibrc and changing "numerix : numeric" to "numerix: numarray" but I got the following error: The import of the numarray version of the _contour module, _na_contour, failed. This is is either because numarray was unavailable when matplotlib was compiled, because a dependency of _na_contour could not be satisfied, or because the build flag for this module was turned off in setup.py. If it appears that _na_contour was not built, make sure you have a working copy of numarray and then re-install matplotlib. Otherwise, the following traceback gives more details: File "/platlib/matplotlib/_contour.py", line 5, in ? ImportError: No module named _na_contour I know I had numarray installed before unpackaging matplotlib. Chris' notes say that he had numeric installed when he packaged matplotlib, but makes no mention of numarray. Perhaps the matplotlib.mpkg needs to be rebuilt on a machine that has numarray installed? GUI design tools

This may be a perennial subject. If this is an oft-repeated request, I sincerely apologize for wasting bandwidth. I have a database application I would like to build in Python. I use MacOS X as my primary machine, but historically I have supported old MacOS and Windows machines. This makes it hard for me to abandon the "cross-platform" mindset. I like tools that ease the creation and deployment of applications. The ideal solution for me would be a tool set that is similar to popular RAD tools such as 4D, Omnis Studio and the like. Using these have spoiled me rotten as a programmer, and I find myself balking at the installation requirements of the pythonic stuff I have looked at. That is, as I work through the steps I wonder how on earth an end user will deal with this. I have experience with OOP, OOA&D and have about 16 years experience writing various stand-alone, client/server and n-tier business applications. I am getting a handle on Python, and I have written a couple of "faceless" applications with it. Perhaps I just need a good "not quite a dummy" article, book or something. I have read "Learning Python" and make good use of python.org resources. Still, I haven't found joy with user experience tools yet. I would be most grateful for any links or suggestions. Hi, Reading up on embedding the Python interpreter, and <http://www.python.org/doc/2.4/ext/embedding.html> says to use PyMac_Initialize() instead of Py_Initialize() to initialise it on Mac; however it doesn't appear to be declared.
