Hi Folks: This is my first question here. I recently upgraded my Framework install of python. I can verify that the aqua version of Tkinter still works, using a "Hello" test button, and I can run the Pmw demos. The problem arises now with a more complicated program: pymol. This is an x-windows-based program with a pwm menu. When I start it, I now get the error: Tk_MacOSXSetupTkNotifier: first [load] of TkAqua has to occur in the main thread! I understand the limitations with the aqua Tk and multi-threading, but this works absolutely fine with Python2.4.1 and earlier. Is there some way to over-ride this protection mechanism (apart from regressing to 2.4.1)? Thanks. Bill Scott

I am a student of Computer Science and i need help understanding how MacOSX handles Python. the class I am in is "Intro to Object Oriented Programing" so they teach in python to reduce teaching of syntax so they can focus on O. Orientation. I need to import modules we create in class into my programs and i want to be able to do this as painlessly as possible per run. My first solution was to find where all the other third party modules are kept so i found "PyObjC" and there i found how to install the modules i needed for class. I got this to work and the terminal agreed however lately I've been having problems. every sence then, ive been getting this error 'import site' failed; use -v for traceback 'import site' failed; use -v for traceback 'import site' failed; use -v for traceback Could not find platform independent libraries <prefix> Consider setting $PYTHONHOME to <prefix>[:<exec_prefix>] 'import site' failed; use -v for traceback and I really don't know what's going on. I know what PATH is and how to append it but my knowledge of unix stops at your tutorials in the tiger terminal, and that of Inside Mac (I never even got Fink and those X Droplets to work ) so I don't want to mess things up further than I already have. Recently (im certian it was a later date than when i changed that) Bittorrent stopped working. (which was made even more obvious when looking at the resources folder: it seems Bittorent is a Python native app). This makes things even more dire because I've been using that program for my anime fix, it doesn't work for ANY account on the machine. the final change is that i found the location of the path in Extras.pth (/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/ Extras/lib/python2.3) found that the last folder was just "python" instead of "python2.3" but after I remedied that, it still didn't work the situation is pretty bad but at least regular scripts work ( n=raw_input('enter the number up to which you want to take the product') n=int(n) k=raw_input('enter the number u want to skip') k=int(k) prod=1 for i in range (1,n+1,k): prod*=i print i print prod ) once with TextWrangler The terminal told me that it couldn't find the debugger file. i just found the file dbg.py and put it were the terminal said it was looking, and sence then i haven't gotten that message. [py2app] building on 10.4 for 10.3?

Hi guys, Can I build apps, using py2app on 10.4, that run on OS X 10.3 also? I know in the past the answer has been "maybe", but I wonder if that has changed with some of the new cross-development stuff in XCode 2.1+. I don't use any python extensions (well, beyond pyobjc), just one NSBundle that I load up when I need to execute C code. (Of course I would be using a non-system Python 2.4, and that's part of the project too, getting that up. Any specific recommendations/gottchas on that would be appreciated.) So in an attempt to finally get rid of the potential morass that further work on PyOXIDE could be, I'm release a very early version of ScrIDE, a generic, extensible, scripting IDE. There are several major differences between the two - first, ScrIDE is designed to support multiple scripting languages, and to be able to do that, the second different is that _everything_ is run in separate processes, which means that you can easily select from different versions of python (or even easily pick between python and pythonw). Finally, it is highly extensible (all sorts of things controlled by various property lists which can be overridden and extended, including adding menu commands that pipe text to/from other processes). The debugger currently does not support breakpoints (but stepping, examination after exceptions, console commands "in context", etc... work), and some of the other browsing/introspection capabilities of PyOXIDE aren't present either yet (though you can get doc strings for simple objects). Binary packages for numarray 1.5.1 and Numeric 24.2

I made binary distributions of the current versions of numarray and Numeric for MacOS 10.3+ and Python 2.4. They are here: <ftp://ftp.astro.washington.edu/pub/users/rowen/PythonPackages/>. They pass their self-tests, except Numeric fails one test (identically whether installed from source or the package, so I suspect the test is broken). I hope somebody will put these on the python website. (If so, let me know and I'll take them down from the ftp site above). Overall I was blown away by how easy py2app made this process. However, I did run into a few issues: 1) I could not build packages for the built-in python 2.3. What I tried (among other things): - Install py2app from py2app-0.2-py2.3-macosx10.3.mpkg - Run bdist_mpkg. It fails with: ... File "/Library/Python/2.3/py2app/py2app/build_app.py", line 24, in ? import macholib.MachOStandalone ImportError: No module named MachOStandalone - I also tried modifying setup.py to import bdist_mpkg, but then python setup.py mpkg_bdist fails in the same way (while importing mpkg_bdist). This is no big deal to me, since I use Python 2.4, but if somebody can explain how to work around this, I'd be happy to supply packages for 2.3 as well. 2) Can I make the two py2apps (for python 2.4 and 2.3) coexist by renaming one set of binaries in /usr/local/bin, or might there be other subtle conflicts? (It would have been easy enough to try this myself, except for the first problem). 3) I tried to use bdist_mpkg to bundle Numeric 24.2 and got this error: AssertionError: distutils has already been patched by <class py2app.install.Distribution at 0x40a090> However, modifying setup.py to import bdist_mpkg and using python setup.py bdist_mpkg worked fine. -- Russell

I'm trying to use python/appscript to send apply-events to a cocoa application, but it seems to be choking on parsing the aete... possibly because the aeta has been replaced by 'sdef' for holding scripting terminology. help? python on tiger question

Hi all In a few weeks I will be giving some Python lectures and I am checking how to support students running Tiger. I don't run Tiger yet so I haven't gone trough the process of getting it to run on that system. In the workshop I would need to explain the students how to install it but also how to install properly packages such as pyOpenGL and pygame. I was wondering if following the instructions on this page http://bill.janssen.org/mac/new-macpython-page.html and downloading from the macpython packages download section the right packages for Tiger is enough or if there is anything else to configure. thanks -- enrike

pythonw vs. python

I've been thinking a little about pythonw vs. python. The former is needed because on OSX any API that needs a connection to the window server (anything that uses a native GUI and some other calls) need to be in an application bundle. pythonw is a program that can be placed anywhere on the PATH and exec's a normal python interpreter inside an application bundle. As of yesterday the python24-fat tree[1] will install a copy of pythonw as the normal python interpreter, that is both 'python' and 'pythonw' are the same program, the one that execs an interpreter inside an application bundle. This works, but at the cost of additional call to exec and therefore two application startups. I guess the additional cost should be lost in the noise, but the micro- optimizer in me isn't happy and especially so because everybody pays while almost nobody should need this feature. The common workaround for this is the undocumented function 'CPSEnableForegroundOperation'. Another workaround might be the TransformProcessType API introduced in OSX 10.3.
