My little iCal event/todo manipulator is loose and available from my Python Bits page: http://orca.mojam.com/~skip/python/ It allows you to add or print iCal events and todos from the command line. You can also feed appropriately formatted email messages to it and turn them into todos or events. Skip

I'm looking over the downloads page again, thinking about what we need to do to support the Universal builds. First off, the discussion last week about which packages will work with it seems very important. Who's got edit access to pythonmac.org? Could someone please put a note on http://pythonmac.org/packages/ to say that the packages listed there are all PPC-only? And do we need a new section for 10.4.2-capable packages, maybe with a stamp that marks those that are Intel-capable? Bill

Numpy Scipy and Darwinports

Hi all, I'd like to build numpy and scipy with the gcc 4.1 provided by darwinport (I fact, they need a fortran compiler). How can I do to change the compiler to be used with distutils ? I've tried something like this : python setup.py build --compiler=gcc-dp-4.1 ( all the file installed with darwinports have the suffix -dp-4.1) but I didn't work. Thank you for your advice. SQLite & python

Hi, I am totally confused by all the versions and name conflicts of py- sqlite and sqlite not to mention the python version confusion. What I really want to do is use both sqlite version 2 and sqlite version 3 since I have existing sqlite version2 DBs and new CoreData apps that use sqlite version 3. From a version/nomenclature standpoint there is a huge mess eg: py-sqlite works with either sqlite 2 or sqlite 3 and py-sqlite2 works with sqlite version 3. I have been using py-sqlite with sqlite version 2 successfully. First problem I see is that there are two version of Python on my Tiger system: /usr/bin/python version 2.3.5 /usr/local/bin/python version 2.4.1 Second problem: The (Apple) installed version of sqlite3 is 3.0.8.6 py-sqlite 2.1 requires sqlite 3.2.2 py-sqlite 2.0 requires sqlite 3.1 py-sqlite 1.1 requires sqlite 3.x So it seems that py-sqlite 1.1 is the one I need. If I install it my installed py-sqlite that used the python sqlite version 2 gets overwritten, not nice. It also seems to get instaslled in the python 2.3 library, also not nice. If I go to darwin ports it wants to upgrade my python to 2.4.2 first. Does anyone have a solution? All in all the whole Python database (lack of) mess is ridiculous! I know that Guido does not feel that databases have any place in python but I don't get it, why does the "batteries included" not include database support, databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL & SQLite? At this point I am ready to mostly give up on Python after over 10 years of use and evangelizing. Dan

Apple Remote "Mouse"

I recently bought a Macbook Pro from Apple. As it comes with a remote, I thought it would be great to use it as a mouse when not in Front Row. The fast forward button would move the cursor to the left, the volume increase would move it up the screen, etc and the play button would serve as a "click." Is there any way to manipulate the cursor position on the screen using Python? It is greatly appreciated if someone can point in the direction of where to look or what to search as no immediately useful hits came up from google. I am absolutely clueless about how to implement any of this. It would be awesome if someone could briefly explain, or maybe point me to a tutorial of any sort, how to write a program that could detect the button pressed on the remote and accordingly move the cursor up, down, side-to-side. Knowing how to disable the volume control of the "up and down" function of the anticipated remote would also be great, if anyone has time to elaborate how this can be done. Has anyone built PIL with the Universal Python?

Hi all, I just sat down to build PIL for the Universal Python, and I had a thought: 1) it needs a couple extra libs, in particular: libjpeg libfreetype I have, in the past, compiled that kind of thing as a static lib, and linked it to the package. However, as we may end up needing the same libs in various packages, maybe we should make a "libs package", that might even install into the Python tree, and they can all use that. libfreetype is needed for both matplotlib and PIL, for instance. NSUncaughtRuntimeErrorException and NSArrayController

Hi folks. I've done a load of googling after getting SIG(variable) errors when adding and removing objects to/from an arrayController in pyobjc and can't seem to figure this one out. I've tried the pyobjc list and have no response so far. Apologies for cross-posting and please let me know if I'm asking the question poorly, vaguely, or on the wrong mailing list. I set Signals.dumpStackOnFatalSignal() as well as Debugging.installVerboseExceptionHandler() and then I start adding python (subclassing NSObject) objects to my NSArrayController. After a variable number of additions and/or subtractions, I get the stack trace below. (there are no other errors, including those related to KVC compliance, etc) Intuition is telling me that I may be in trouble because I'm instantiating python singleton objects (subclassing the class directly below) as attributes of the object that I'm adding to the NSArrayController, but I could be way off here. *Update: I removed all singletons from my code and have the same behavior. *Update: this happens whether or not I have the objects delete on removal from the controller. class scAbstractSingleton(object): def __new__(cls, *args, **kwds): it = cls.__dict__.get("__it__") if it is not None: return it cls.__it__ = it = object.__new__(cls) it.init(*args, **kwds) return it def init(self, *args, **kwds): pass Is there a way post-mortem to get the object that *was* at 0x114d740 in the trace below? I assume that figuring out which object (0x114d740 in the trace below) was freed is a good place to start, but I don't know if that's possible in retrospect, as that object is freed.
