Py2app and shared libraries under Leopard

I've recently been involved with Robin Becker of Reportlabs building and testing one of their extension libraries across Intel and PPC hardware. Built using Distutils under Leopard, the library is working exactly as intended/expected. However, comparing the .so file produced, it is under half the size of the same built using Tiger - as well as having the execute permissions set, so Finder reports it as a Unix executable instead of a document. Both versions are reported as Mach-O universal binaries. $ cd /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/lib/python2.5/site-packages/ $ ls -l _render* -rwxr-xr-x 1 forestfield admin 244620 10 Dec 12:40 _renderPM-Leopard.so -rw-r--r-- 1 forestfield admin 570732 10 Dec 16:38 _renderPM.so $ file _render* _renderPM-Leopard.so: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures _renderPM-Leopard.so (for architecture i386): Mach-O bundle i386 _renderPM-Leopard.so (for architecture ppc): Mach-O bundle ppc _renderPM.so: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures _renderPM.so (for architecture i386): Mach-O bundle i386 _renderPM.so (for architecture ppc): Mach-O bundle ppc The shared libraries in PIL also show the same effects when built under Leopard and Tiger respectively. When I apply py2app to an application that uses these libraries, when the Leopard-built versions are used, I get ValueError: Unknown load command: 27 as detailed in the attached log file. If I replace the libraries with their Tiger-built counterparts, the application builds OK (under Leopard). I installed Xcode on Leopard using default settings. Any ideas please? I've been reading here about a few people who've been interfacing with their iCal calendars via vobject. To take it directly from the website "VObject simplifies the process of parsing and creating iCalendar and vCard objects" --(http://vobject.skyhouseconsulting.com/usage.html) perhaps you could point your python to the ical callendar store place (i forget where this is but its documented at apple somewhere ) and edit the ical calendar objects with this. does pkg_resources think that "macosx-10.3" is incompatible with 10.5?

Folks: It appears that eggs built on Mac OS 10.4 are produced with filenames containing "macosx-10.3", like this: http://pypi.python.org/packages/2.5/s/simplejson/simplejson-1.7.3- py2.5-macosx-10.3-fat.egg but that if you try to easy_install such a package on Mac OS 10.5, it will deem that egg to be incompatible with the current platform and will instead try to install from a source tarball if it can find one. (On the other hand if you install that egg on Mac OS 10.4, it will work.) PJE reports that the platform versioning code for OS X was contributed by someone other than he to pkg_resources, and that he doesn't know how it works, except that it reads /usr/bin/sw_vers. Does anyone know if there is a good reason for Python running on 10.5 to reject binaries built on 10.4, and if not what would be required to make this version check pass? Building Python with X11 Tkinter

Hi, On OS X, I'd like to be able to build my own copy of Python that uses my own copy of Tkinter (built for X11). I've seen several posts to this list where people mention building python this way (e.g. [1] and [2] below), but I'm pretty unfamiliar with the concepts, so I wonder if someone could give me some more help, or point me to a place where there are some instructions? I found the only way I could get Python to build using my own tcl and tk was by renaming OS X's Tk and Tcl framework directories so that they would not be found. Is there some alteration I can make to python's setup.py instead? I'd like to have Python use X11 rather than Aqua so that I can run automated (buildbot) tests of an application (that is based on Python) on a virtual (Xvfb) display. You should be able to specify the non framework tcl and tk to the configure script which you would run before setup.py do configure --help used to show it to be something like configure- with-tcl=foo configure-with-tk=bar where foo and bar are the directories with the tcl and tk distributions in. However this no longer holds .... So whether this is correct I'm unable to say at present. This should not be AquaTk which has some deficiencies notably it doesn't include Togl or Tix this precludes the use of a library in the standard linux distribution (Tix) and prevents any access to OpenGL through Tkinter. You could also consider using a porting framework that way though either way you will end up having to wrangle 3 pythons. the 2.3.x version one shipped with OSX the 2.5.x Framework install that brought you here and the X11 2.x.x that you build yourself or install from Mac/Darwinports or Fink This means that you have to be quite careful about tracking where and how you install things into the site-packages directory of each version. You cannot really run framework builds alongside X11 builds of extension libraries for the same python. If its not heresy on this list I'd suggest getting familiar with the Unix build process on Linux (in a VM sandbox if necessary) first before (potentially) creating mayhem on your Mac. It will reduce the number of variables and simplify the learning curve before having to deal with what are effectively two different environments that coexist under OS X. Opening files with Japanese characters on Tiger

Hi all, I ran into an issue recently opening files with Japanese characters on Tiger. Essentially I am reading from a utf-8 file containing lists of file names. Most are completely in English, a few contain Japanese characters in the filename. I am opening the files for a binary write. Unfortunately when I do this, and the filename contains Japanese characters, I get an exception of type exceptions.IOError, with the specific exception being an 'invalid mode: wb.' I've tried changing the encoding of the string in various ways, but as far as I know, I should be passing in a utf-8 string to open, and the string is already in utf-8. This does work on Leopard, however. I don't actually think it's a Python issue directly though, as we're using py2app, so the python being used is the same in (Python 2.5.0 from pythonmac.org) testing this on both Tiger and Leopard. There seems to be some underlying interaction with the file system that is not going well on Tiger. Any ideas? Googling has really only turned up this: http://www.selenic.com/mercurial/bts/issue481 Which seems to be a similar issue. Perhaps my google-foo is weak. :) At any rate, a work around has been instituted, the open command is in a try/except block, and if the exception is thrown, we just write the file to a temporary English file, then do a rename to the Japanese filename. It works, but it would be nice to not have to do that. Any ideas appreciated, and I may end up at Filesystem-Dev, I just figured I would start here. Thanks! Jim

SWIG on MacOS X 10.4

Hi, I'm just joining the list, specifically to figure out how to use SWIG on MacOS X 10.4 (intel). I have the default Apple Python 2.3.5 as well as MacPython 2.5 installed. I've following the tutorial at the swig.org Web site, using the Apple Python 2.3.5. When I try to create the wrapper library, I get a bunch of undefined symbols, such as: _PyArg_ParseTuple _PyArg_UnpackTuple These are in the wrapper code produced by SWIG. How do I include these functions in the build of the wrapper library? I apologize if this has been discussed before. I didn't see an easy way to search the mailing list archive. Thanks! Bernard B. py2app "bus error" on leopard

Lo all, I'm trying to bundle an app using py2app on osx leopard. I'm using the 0.3.6 version of py2app and my app is written and built with the framework version of python 2.5.2. When I run my app as a normal script it runs fine, and the wxpython gui displays and works normally, but when I use py2app to creapte a bundle it throws a meaningless (to me) error every time I try to launch the created app, either by using open on the .app bundle or by running the script inside the bundle directly. The app tries to start up (a python launcher icon appears in the dock) but then crashes. If I'm running the script inside the bundle from a terminal I get "bus error" output to the console when it crashes. If I'm using open to run the bundle, after it crashes I get the standard osx crashed app dialog, and the traceback there states: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000038 among other things. Anyone got any idea what the problem is? Thanks, Stephen.

Get the locale on OSX

Hi, I'm trying to port an python application which runs fine on Windows and Linux to OSX. However, it seems "lang = locale.getdefaultlocale()[0]" doesn't work. I've searched quite some bit on the Internet and on this mailinglist, and apparently it is a problem, but I haven't found any solution for it. Does anybody here have one? Thanks, Chris
