Chase Checking Account Basics

Chase offers various checking accounts for customers to choose from, organized into three categories: everyday accounts, premium accounts and accounts for kids and students. Several Chase business checking accounts are also available.

Checking accounts from Chase have no minimum deposit requirements, but they do carry monthly fees. However, fees can be waived by meeting specific requirements.

Chase Total Checking®

The Chase Total Checking account is Chase’s most popular checking option and carries a monthly fee of $15.

To avoid the fee, account holders must do one of the following each month:

  • Receive electronic deposits totaling $500 or more
  • Have a balance of $1,500 or more at the beginning of each day
  • Have an average beginning-day balance of $5,000 or more across this and linked qualifying accounts

Chase Secure Banking℠

The Chase Secure Banking account is an everyday checking account that offers an early direct deposit feature, allowing you to get paid up to two business days sooner.

To avoid the account’s $4.95 monthly fee, account holders must receive qualifying electronic deposits totaling $250 or more per statement period.

Chase Premier Plus Checking℠

The Chase Premier Plus Checking account has a higher monthly fee than Chase’s other everyday accounts, but offers additional features. These perks include no fees on the first four non-Chase ATM transactions each statement period and no fees on eligible linked accounts, including additional personal Chase checking and savings accounts.

The account’s monthly service fee of $25 can be waived by doing one of the following each monthly statement period:

  • Have an average beginning-day balance of $15,000 or more in any combination of this account and linked qualifying accounts
  • Have a linked qualifying Chase first mortgage enrolled in automatic payments from your Chase account
  • Be a current servicemember or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces with a qualifying military ID

The account also earns interest, although at a negligible rate of 0.01% annual percentage yield (APY).

Chase Sapphire Banking

The Chase Sapphire Checking account provides several benefits not available with Chase’s everyday checking accounts.

The account waives all out-of-network ATM fees as well as incoming and outgoing wire transfer fees. It also waives overdraft fees up to four days a year. With this account, you’ll also be able to earn Premier relationship rates when you link a Chase Premier Savings account and make at least five customer-initiated transactions with your checking account in a monthly statement period.

To avoid the account’s $25 monthly fee, account holders must have an average beginning-day balance of $75,000 or more between this account and linked qualifying accounts.

Chase Private Client Checking℠

The Chase Private Client Checking account charges a $35 monthly fee that can be avoided by meeting one of the following criteria:

  • Have a $150,000 average beginning-day balance across this and linked accounts
  • Link a Chase Platinum Business Checking account

Like the Chase Sapphire account, the Chase Private Client Checking account waives out-of-network ATM fees, wire transfer fees and overdraft fees up to four days a year. Both accounts also offer higher daily purchase limits and ATM withdrawal limits.

Other features of the account include discounted rates on home and auto loans, access to a Chase Private Client banker, access to CD ladders and exclusive sports and entertainment benefits.

Chase First Banking℠

Individuals with a qualifying Chase checking account can open a Chase First Banking account for their child. The account is designed for children ages six to 12, but is open to kids up to age 17.

The account offers a range of features to help kids learn about the basics of money management. Parents have complete control over the account and can assign chores, receive account alerts, create allowances and choose where and how much their child can spend or withdraw.

Kids can use their debit card at stores, online or to withdraw funds from ATMs. They can also set savings goals and track their balances and transactions within the Chase app.

Chase High School Checking℠

Teens ages 13 to 17 can co-own a Chase High School Checking account with a parent or guardian, who must have a linked personal Chase checking account.

The Chase High School Checking account allows kids to transfer money with Zelle and to receive direct deposits. This account can only be opened in person at a Chase bank.

Chase College Checking℠

The Chase College Checking account is available for students ages 17 to 24 who are enrolled in college or a vocational, technical or trade school. The account has no monthly service fee up to the graduation date provided at account opening (five years maximum).

Account holders can send payments with Zelle, set up automatic savings and build their credit with a personalized plan through Chase Credit Journey.
