It’s no wonder that hybrid mattresses are the most popular bed style today: They offer the best of both worlds by combining the contouring feel of foam with the support of innersprings. After panel testing over 50 beds, we zeroed in on the best hybrid mattresses of 2025, naming the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid the top pick overall—its blend of quality materials and luxury features benefit a wide variety of sleepers.
Our comprehensive selection process combines hands-on testing with medical expert consultation. Our team of certified sleep science coaches conducted two rounds of testing with a diverse group of panelists, ensuring our winners cater to various body types, sleep positions and comfort preferences. We also consulted medical experts on the key qualities a hybrid mattress needs to ensure proper spine alignment and pressure relief for a healthy night's sleep. The result of these combined efforts is our list of the 12 best hybrid mattresses, each with specific advice on who it’s best for.
The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid stood out as an obvious top choice for us during testing because it’s far from your standard hybrid bed. We found it’s suitable for multiple sleeping positions, has a cooling feel and excels at isolating motion.
Comfortable In All Positions
This hotel-quality mattress is cozy and plush, with a versatile firmness profile available in three levels (plush, medium-firm and firm) to accommodate most sleep postures. Seven testers tried the medium-firm model; they scored it a 9 out of 10 for back and stomach sleeping and an 8 out of 10 for side sleeping. One tester, who calls the Sapira Chill Hybrid one of her favorites for “back sleeping comfort,” says, “[It has] the right amount of plushness and stable support.” Senior strategy editor Katie Simpson also calls attention to its side sleeping comfort, and says, “I don’t feel much pressure buildup while on my side at all—I feel pretty well-cradled.”
Excellent For Hot Sleepers
The Sapira Chill Hybrid is also a good cooling pick if you tend to sleep warm. Chapman sleeps on the mattress in the plush model and says “it boasts some impressive cooling features,” which you can read more about in our Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid review. And when testing it with a team, seven out of seven say it has a noticeably cooling feel. Its cover is infused with cooling fibers to help regulate temperature, while its individually wrapped coils promote airflow.
Stays (Mostly) Still When You Toss And Turn
Testers found it has good motion isolation, a highlight feature for people who share a mattress with a partner (or a large pet). With an 8 out of 10 score, updates writer Alexandra Garrett says, “The water barely moved at all during testing. I even hopped into bed at one point and the water just swayed around in the glass. I can see myself comfortably sleeping on this bed with my dog who tosses and turns a lot.”
Expert tip: The medium-firm model is a good middle ground for many sleeper types like back, stomach and combination sleepers. Tried and true side sleepers and lightweight individuals should consider the soft model for more plushness, while heavy body types or those who prefer a lifted feel should consider the firm.

Thanks to its medium-firm feel and thick, quilted pillow top, the Helix Midnight Luxe was far and away the most comfortable hybrid mattress we tested. According to senior content strategy analyst Catie Jaffe, “This bed offers a great mix of comfort and support for [my] whole body. When lying on my side, I feel there’s space to move my arms into different positions and still maintain shoulder and head support, something I find tricky when dealing with pillow-top mattresses.”
Luxury Feel With Sturdy Support
Six testers classify the Helix Midnight Luxe as a luxurious mattress that feels as soft as it looks, partly attributing this to its fluffy top. Jaffe says, “The quilting is lifted yet tight, indicating its balance of cushion with underlying firmness and support. The cover’s knit fabric is also soft to the touch.” Though if you sleep hot, you can upgrade to a cooling cover (like the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid has) for an extra $200.
High Scores For Pressure Relief, Motion Isolation And Edge Support
Chapman, who’s tested the Midnight Luxe several times over the past three years, says, “The Midnight Luxe knocks it out of the park with its pressure-relieving foams, sturdy coil support and strong motion isolation.” It combines a layer of individually wrapped coils with edge support reinforcements and three layers of foam that work together to support your body, relieve pressure and absorb motion.
Our testers scored it an 8 out of 10 for both motion isolation and edge support. Managing editor Emmy Favilla says, “As someone who is often pushed to the edge of my bed by my two dogs taking up lots of space, edge support is really important to me. It feels like I could comfortably sleep in any position near the edge of this bed and not feel like I'm falling off.” The coil layer is also reinforced in the center of the mattress to provide extra support under your hips, an area that is prone to sinking on less durable mattresses. Learn more about this hybrid in our full Helix Midnight Luxe review.
Expert tip: An ErgoAlign Layer upgrade is available for $199; we recommend it for sleepers over 250 pounds, those with back pain or anyone who needs a more lifted, supportive feel below the midsection.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is our recommendation to anyone who wants a wallet-friendly option that still hits the mark on quality—our testers agreed it feels durable and well-made. As one of our favorite affordable mattresses, the Signature is a five-layer hybrid that features over 700 individually wrapped coils, multiple foam layers and a tightly quilted top.
Balanced Feel
In addition to its seemingly upscale design, our testers think the medium model they tried suits most sleeping positions, as they scored it an 8 out of 10 for side and stomach sleeping, and an 8.5 for back sleeping. Chapman says, “This is a dreamy mattress for back sleeping. The level of cushioning is just right for my hips, and my body feels supported overall. Its thick pillowy cover offers a gentle touch for the lower back and shoulders.” That said, it comes in three firmness levels—soft, medium and firm—so you can choose according to your sleeping position and personal preferences. There’s also an option to upgrade to a pillow top for enhanced contouring and cooling, which costs $300 extra for the queen size.
Great Value For The Price
Dillon slept on this mattress for over a month and thinks it offers the same comfort and quality as beds that cost a bit more–especially if you opt for the pillow top. Its highest-rating performance features include edge support and ease of movement (8.5 out of 10), making it a good option for couples who share a mattress. Of course, there’s nothing like trying it for yourself, which is why Brooklyn Bedding includes a 120-night trial. However, a $99 return fee applies. See more about the bed in our Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress review.
Expert tip: The mattress feels a little firmer than advertised. If you’re unsure of which firmness to get, the brand’s website includes a buying guide with suggestions based on height, weight and dominant sleep style. We think side sleepers should choose the soft model for a proper, pressure-relieving feel, while back sleepers go with medium and stomach sleepers opt for firm.
The WinkBed Plus is one of the nicest and most durable mattresses we tested, and it won over a range of body types—including lightweight sleepers under 150 pounds. Simpson is in the lightweight class and says, “My spine doesn’t feel out of alignment, and I don’t feel my hips sinking. [It] feels like an ideal mattress for back sleepers.” And one of our heavyweight testers said the WinkBed Plus feels most comfortable when lying on his stomach: “There’s even less of a sinking feeling than there is on my back and there’s no pressure on any parts of the body.”
More Durable Than Comparable Mattresses
Most queen-size mattresses can accommodate up to 500 pounds, but the WinkBed Plus has a maximum weight capacity of 900 pounds and has been pressure-tested for durability by a third party, according to the brand. To do this, it boasts high-density foam, a latex support layer and reinforced coils arranged in five ergonomic zones for targeted support and pressure relief. In combination with the bed’s fluffy pillow top, testers found it feels luxuriously pressure-relieving, scoring it an 8 out of 10 in pressure relief. “This bed is firm yet cushioned,” says a tester. “The first thing I noticed was how plush and pillowy the very top layer of the mattress was, which made it seem more luxurious.”
Exceptional Edge Support
Though it scored an 8.5 in ease of movement and an 8 in motion isolation, one of its highest performing features is its edge support, which our testers scored a 9 out of 10. One tester says, “I don’t notice a difference between the center of the mattress and the edge of the mattress. There’s enough support so that with my eyes closed, I’m not able to tell the difference between the edge and the center.” What’s called an Extra-Edge Support System ensures the entire surface of the bed is suitable for sleeping and the edges are stable enough when getting out of bed.
Expert tip: If you and your sleeping partner have larger builds, you should both find it medium-firm and particularly comfortable for back, stomach and combo sleeping. Be prepared to ask for help when setting up this heavy bed as there’s no white glove delivery option available.
Editor’s Note: DreamCloud has recently redesigned its Premier Hybrid mattress, and we plan to test the new 2025 model this September. The review below is based on the previous version of this mattress; however, we stand by our recommendation based on how that model performed in our hands-on evaluation.
For folks who switch between their back and side, not many mattresses can suit each sleeping position as nicely and comfortably as the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid. It provides plenty of pressure relief and support for sleepers. Plus, it offers a responsive feel that makes shifting positions simple.
Ample Support And Pressure Relief
Our six testers found the bed’s medium-firm profile simultaneously contours the joints and supports the lumbar region. Jaffe says, “I enjoy back sleeping on this mattress. My body remained aligned, yet there is a bit more pressure relief in the shoulder and trunk area than in the DreamCloud Hybrid.” Favilla adds, “My body feels cradled by the mattress, and it’s very comfortable to sleep on my back on this one. I imagine it would be comfy to sleep all night in this position.”
Responds To Changes In Position Quickly
Although the bed’s primary comfort material is memory foam, it doesn’t have deep sinkage like other mattresses that use the material. Our testers scored it an 8 out of 10 for ease of movement. Jaffe claims, “The mattress does not feel bouncy, but there is a comfortable balance of firmness and cushion that make it decently easy to move and roll around.” The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is made with a system of pocketed coils that make the mattress more responsive. Though, if you prefer a bed that excels at motion isolation because you and your partner have different sleep schedules, consider the all-foam DreamCloud Premier model. That said, our testers scored its motion isolation an 8 out of 10, which is a great rating for a mattress that contains coils. See our DreamCloud Premier Hybrid review for further details.
Expert tip: For a softer and more luxurious feel and design, try the DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid, which combines a thick and airy Euro pillow top with a soft, quilted-foam cooling cover.
In addition to being one of our testers’ top choices among 24 hybrid mattresses we retested, the Nolah Evolution 15 Mattress showed it has superior cushion and pressure relief for side sleepers of various body sizes.
Fit For Side Sleepers Of All Body Types
The luxury firm model scored an 8.5 out of 10 for its side-sleeping comfort, as Favilla says, “Side sleeping on this one is very comfortable. I feel supported and cradled by the material,” and a heavyweight testers agrees, adding that he also felt properly supported. However, the soft model is an even more plush choice for lightweight to average-weight side sleepers who want extra pressure relief. Chapman tested the plush Nolah Evolution 15 Mattress in her home for over a month and says, “The pressure relief has been fantastic for me as a side sleeper.” She continues, “It’s difficult to find a mattress that doesn’t cause at least some discomfort around my shoulder after lying on it for a while, but I haven’t felt that at all with this one.”
Great For Couples
Side sleepers can also appreciate its responsiveness when switching from one side to the other. Testers rated ease of movement an 8 out of 10, and in Favilla’s experience, she says, “It’s quite comfortable to switch positions. While the mattress isn’t bouncy, per se, it does feel responsive to movement.” Its thick, 8-inch pocketed coil layer with reinforced edges makes it a breeze to move around on. Then, its blend of comfortable foams and a thick Euro pillow top make it a top contender for motion isolation.
Testers placed a water glass near the edge of the mattress and made rolling, sitting and jumping movements near the cup to test motion isolation, ultimately scoring the Evolution an 8 out of 10. Jaffe says, “The water and cup jiggled upon jumping and intense movements, but when getting in and out of the bed gently, I noticed hardly any movement at all on the other side of the bed.” For a full breakdown of its features and highlights, see our Nolah Evolution 15 Mattress review.
Expert tip: Petite side sleepers or those who prefer a soft feel should choose the plush model, side sleepers who switch to other sleeping positions should choose the luxury firm model and those weighing more than 250 pounds should pick the firm model.
Another Forbes Vetted favorite, the Saatva Classic is an innerspring hybrid with multiple layers designed to target back pain and support the lumbar region. Our team tested both the luxury firm and firm models, and rated them two of the most supportive beds among 27 other mattresses.
Designed To Support A Neutral Spine Alignment
While back sleeping on the firm model, Garrett says, “I feel supported and elongated while lying on my back on this mattress, similar to the Plank Firm Mattress. It also provided a nice touch of cushioning around my hips, which I appreciate since I typically prefer a medium to medium-firm bed.”
As for the luxury firm model, one tester says, “There is no pressure buildup in the lower back or the hips; the hips stay elevated and there doesn't seem to be any noticeable sinkage in any portion of the mattress when I lie on my stomach.” Along with a zoned pillow top and two layers of coils, the Saatva has a spinal wire and a layer of high-density memory foam for optimal support and pressure relief for your lumbar area. High-density foam also surrounds the perimeter of the mattress for reinforced edge support, making it sturdy for those with back pain to get in or out of bed. Our testers scored the firm model a perfect 10 for edge support, and the luxury firm got a solid 9.
Several Customizations Available
The Saatva Classic is available in two height profiles (11.5 or 14.5 inches) and your choice of a plush, luxury firm or firm feel. We found the luxury firm model to be on the firmer side of medium-firm and the firm model to be a true firm. You get a full year to try the Saatva out, a lifetime warranty if you decide to keep it and free in-room delivery to save your back from further strain—just note that returns come with a $99 fee. Check out our Saatva Classic review for more insights.
Expert tip: Most people with back pain should feel best with the luxury firm or firm. But for those who live with chronic back or joint pain, Saatva also offers the Saatva Rx, a softer bed specifically designed to offer targeted support and relief for conditions like sciatica, arthritis and scoliosis.
Our testers found the medium model of the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress to have a balanced feel that can work well for couples with different preferences. It’s plush enough to relieve pressure on side sleepers’ hips and shoulders, and supportive enough to promote alignment for back and stomach sleepers.
A Compromise For Different Sleep Styles
Due to its supportive design, plush foams and pillowy top, this mattress can cater to a variety of sleep needs. According to Garrett, “This bed feels really nice while side sleeping. During testing, I felt a number of beds decompress my spine while lying on my back. However, this is the first mattress that gave me that sensation while lying on my side.” As for back sleeping, Favilla says, “This is perhaps the comfiest bed yet for back sleeping for me. The pressure relief is noticeable, and the firmness level is perfect for my preferences.” Though the medium model is accommodating for different sleeping positions, couples can choose a softer or firmer model if preferred.
Tested Well For Edge Support And Motion Isolation
The Bear Elite scored highly in our edge support and motion isolation tests, two important features for any sleeper, but especially couples. A tester over 250 pounds scored its edge support a 9 out of 10, and says he feels no sloping while lying on the edge. Dillon also backs its motion-isolating capabilities after she put it through our water glass test: “This is one of the bed’s best performance factors, it seems. No matter what movements I make, jerky or subtle, the water glass doesn’t wobble.”
Designed To Dissipate Excess Body Heat
It also has cooling materials to help prevent overheating, like copper infusions and phase change material. Active couples or those willing to splurge on extra features can consider adding the Celliant-infused cover. Some studies show Celliant can help promote better sleep, and according to the originators of the synthetic fiber, it can aid in rejuvenation and restoration during sleep.
Expert tip: The medium model should accommodate most couples, especially if you and your partner are primarily back or side sleepers. For heavyweight partners or those looking for more spinal support, the firm model is a more suitable choice.
The Aurora Luxe Cooling Mattress from Brooklyn Bedding lives up to its name as one of our editors’ and testers’ favorite beds for hot sleepers, with multiple cooling aspects throughout to help regulate temperature. This includes a cool-to-the-touch cover, copper and gel-infused foams and a breathable coil base.
Significantly Cooler Than Other Mattresses We Tested
Five people tested the firm mattress model with the optional pillow top added (it’s offered in soft, medium and firm, and then you can add a 2-inch pillow top for extra cushioning for a fee). Our testers called it out for being noticeably cooler than the others, highlighting its cool-to-the-touch cover. Dillon says, “I can see this bed helping to regulate temperature.”
In addition to our group testing, Chapman tested the medium mattress model with the pillow top at home for over a year, and says, “I found the bed nicely regulated my body temperature and kept heat from getting trapped. My husband also says this is the coolest mattress he’s ever slept on.” In addition to its cover woven with cooling fibers, it’s made with copper- and gel-infused foams that help draw body heat away and a system of pocketed coils that promote airflow.
Impressive Performance For Edge Support And Motion Isolation
This bed is more than a cooling mattress; Our testers also praise it for its ease of movement, which scored an 8.5 out of 10, motion isolation and edge support, which we rated an 8 out of 10. Dillon says, “It’s cushy and responsive. There is no sinkage here. It’s not as light and airy as a mattress like Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid, but it’s very pleasant.” Simpson adds, “It feels really supportive when lying near the edge. It feels as supportive as it does in the center of the mattress.” See more in our Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling Mattress review.
Expert tip: Several of our testers found the pillow top softens the mattress’ overall feel. Keep this in mind as you choose the right firmness for your needs and whether or not you want to add the pillow top. We recommend that side sleepers opt for the soft model and consider the pillow top, the medium for back sleepers and firm for stomach sleepers.
The RestorePremier Hybrid is the nicest mattress within the brand’s Restore collection, and sets itself apart from other beds we’ve tested with its own special Hyper-Elastic Polymer material, with a feel similar to a gel shoe insole. Thanks to its construction, this mattress is among the most luxurious models we’ve tested–it’s cushioned and bouncy with top-notch cooling properties.
Impressive Pressure Relief With Deep Contouring
Our heavyweight tester describes the luxurious profile as “plush, cushiony and airy.” He continues, “It feels very soft as well, like it has the feeling of a pillow top but more bouncy, which I like.” Although it’s a softer mattress, testers scored it an 8.5 out of 10 for each sleeping position: back, side and stomach. Favilla says she is “obsessed” with the mattress and it’s “incredibly comfortable,” adding, “I feel supported throughout my body.” The material gives you a pressure-relieving and weightless sensation that’s supportive at the same time. And although it’s bouncy, our testers rated its motion isolation an 8 out of 10, making it a good match for couples who have a partner that tosses and turns.
Sleeps Exceptionally Cool
The Purple RestorePremier also falls in line with the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling as far as temperature regulation goes. According to Forbes Vetted executive editor Dave Johnson who sleeps on the Purple RestorePremier, “Not only do you get airflow through and around the innerspring coils, but the GelFlex Grid (the layer closest to your skin, just under the SoftFlex cover) has its own channels to induce airflow through the mattress. The end result: I noted absolutely no heat retention at all. The mattress was cool on my skin when I climbed into bed and it stayed that way all night. If you sleep hot, you should appreciate this mattress.” It doesn’t retain heat like regular foam, and thanks to its grid formation with rows of little air pockets, it’s good at promoting airflow. Read more in our full Purple RestorePremier Hybrid Mattress review.
Expert tip: If you weigh more than 150 pounds and strictly sleep on your stomach, we recommend considering a firmer bed to ensure proper support long-term.
Avocado is among the top-rated organic mattress brands on the market, and the company’s Green Mattress proved to be the crème de la crème of organic beds during our testing. Garrett says, “This bed feels ‘green’ from the get-go (and not because it literally has green trim). I love the look and silky-soft feel of the cotton cover. When I press down on the bed, I like how responsive it is. I also appreciate that it smells more natural than some of the other mattresses I tested. I suffer from allergies and I can see how this mattress may be able to help ease some of those symptoms.” Organic latex, the bed’s primary comfort material, has naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial properties.
Excellent Spine Alignment And Pressure Relief
With three firmness levels to pick from and an impressive list of certifications to back its eco-friendly design, it’s a good option for people who want customization and peace of mind in their purchase. Five testers tried the firm option and found it’s best for back and stomach sleepers, complimenting its ability to support the spine while lying in these positions. One tester claims, “The top is comfortable and soft, but the firmness and lack of sinkage is perfect for back sleepers. If someone is seeking a highly supportive mattress for their back, it would be a great option.” And while lying on her stomach, Chapman says, “It keeps my hips lifted and in line with my shoulders, while the latex and thick cover provide a gentle touch. It feels really comfortable in this position and very supportive. I don’t feel any areas of pain or discomfort.”
Supportive Latex Core
Underneath its latex foam comfort layer is a system of over 1,000 zoned pocketed coils, which provide targeted support and relief and help limit motion transfer. To top it off is a soft cover made from organic cotton and organic wool sourced from New Zealand. This combination of materials was supportive and responsive during testing. The latex foam cradles your curves without making you feel like you’re inside the bed’s layers. The pocketed coils and perforated foam also promote airflow, making it a good pick for hot sleepers. Learn more in our Avocado Green Mattress review.
Expert tip: Side sleepers should opt for the plush model for optimal pressure relief, while most back and stomach sleepers should consider the medium or firm. The firm model is best for those who want a truly firm bed, including heavyweight sleepers around 250 pounds or more.
The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress was a clear winner for the best soft hybrid mattress, with one of the most cushy, marshmallowy profiles among the 24 hybrid beds we tested and compared. As one tester says, “It’s very dense but airy and pillowy at the same time.” One of our heavyweight testers adds, “This is a fantastic mattress, very luxurious. I love how much it absorbs all the pressure points of my body. It feels like I’m floating.”
A Pressure-Relieving Choice For Side Sleepers
With such a soft and pressure-relieving feel, Chapman says, “This feels incredible while side sleeping. It has a soft foam feel that isn’t like quicksand but offers more of a cushioning hug. Both my hip and shoulder feel stellar pressure relief.” Dillon agrees and says, “This mattress feels great when I’m on my side—I think it was made with side sleepers in mind. The foam is so cushy and marshmallowy but in a light and airy way, not a sinking way like typical memory foam. This makes it really pressure-relieving under my shoulders and hips.” In addition to a base layer of 6-inch individually wrapped springs, a bed of 1-inch nanocoils work in tandem with the brand’s signature T&N Adaptive Foam to provide pressure relief where you need it most.
Breathable, But Not As Cooling As Other Hybrids We Tested
The “Mint” refers to this hybrid’s cooling prowess, courtesy of breathable, open-cell foams infused with gel and graphite to help draw heat away from the body. Our testers found its temperature ranged from average to cooling, but not quite as temperature-regulating as the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling or Purple RestorePremier. Learn more in our in-depth Mint Hybrid review.
Expert tip: Although it has an ultra-soft feel, we found this bed can also accommodate a back sleeper (in addition to side sleepers). Though, heavyweight back sleepers over 250 pounds should consider a firmer mattress with more support.
Other Hybrid Mattresses We Tested Worth Considering
We’ve tested more than a hundred hybrid mattresses over the years. While the four mattresses below didn’t make the final cut for this list, they still may be a good fit for you, as they’re all featured in our guide to the Best Mattresses of 2025.
Best Value: DreamCloud Classic Hybrid ($649): With a Forbes Vetted score of 4.5 out of 5, this mattress impressed our testers with its true medium-firm feel that’s ideal for back and stomach sleeping. It’s firm yet cushioned with sturdy support from the center to the edge of the bed, and at $649 for a queen-size bed, it’s among the most affordable options we’ve tried.
Best Luxury: Stearns & Foster Reserve: ($4,199, was $4,799): This mattress is the epitome of luxury, earning a 4.8 out of 5 from our mattress-testing team. It has everything you’d expect from a high-end bed, from a hand-tufted cover to Tempur-Indulge Memory Foam underneath. Our testers say it feels soft and squishy with enough firmness to accommodate most sleep needs.
Most Comfortable: The WinkBed ($1,499, was $1,799): Receiving a Forbes Vetted score of 4.8 out of 5, this mattress stood out during testing thanks to its comfortable Euro pillow top. It feels breathable and plush; our testers compared lying on The WinkBed to being hugged by a cloud. That said, it feels a little firmer than advertised.
Best For Heavy People: Titan Plus Luxe ($1,119, was $1,599): Made specifically for big and tall sleepers, this mattress earned an overall score of 4.5 out of 5 among our plus-size mattress testers. It’s firm and supportive for most heavyweight back and stomach sleepers, while providing ample pressure relief for heavyweight side sleepers. However, the WinkBed Plus provides a bouncier feel that’s a tad easier to move around on.
How We Tested The Best Hybrid Mattresses
To identify the best hybrid mattresses of 2025, our team undertook a rigorous, multi-stage testing process. We evaluated over 50 different models over two rounds of hands-on testing, and continue to conduct long-term testing of our winners. Our final recommendations are the result of this extensive research, combining quantitative scores with qualitative feedback from a diverse panel of testers.
Our Testing Process
Our methodology was designed to gather comprehensive data from a wide range of sleepers.
- A diverse panel: We recruited a panel of testers representing a variety of body types, sleeping positions and comfort preferences to ensure our findings are widely applicable.
- Two testing rounds: Our panel evaluated the mattresses during intensive two-day testing sessions, allowing for direct side-by-side comparisons.
- Long-term, at-home testing: We continue to conduct long-term testing for all of our top picks. This involves testers sleeping on the mattresses at home for at least 30 nights to get a true sense of their long-term comfort and durability.
Our Evaluation Criteria
During our hands-on testing, we scored each mattress based on its performance in four key areas:
- Support: We tested for consistent support from the center of the bed to the edge. We also performed an edge support test by sitting on the side of the bed, as if bending over to tie a shoe, to check for compression.
- Pressure relief: Lying in each sleeping position, we paid close attention to how well the comfort layers contoured to major pressure points, like the shoulders and hips, and noted any discomfort.
- Motion isolation: To measure motion isolation, we performed a water glass test. We placed a full glass of water on one side of the bed and made various movements on the other, noting how much the water moved. The less it moved, the better the score.
- Ease of movement: We noted how much bounce each mattress provided and whether it was easy to switch positions. We specifically looked for any resistance or feeling of being “stuck” in the foam layers.
What To Consider When Buying A Hybrid Mattress
Hybrid mattresses aren’t one-size-fits-all. To find your ideal match, it’s important to pay attention to your personal sleep needs and preferences.
Sleep Position And Firmness
When shopping for a hybrid mattress, your preferred sleeping position dictates what firmness level to consider.
- Soft mattresses for side sleepers: Plush mattresses with cushioned comfort layers and cloud-like pillow tops minimize pressure buildup around the knees, hips and shoulders—the areas side sleepers need the most comfort.
- Medium-firm mattresses for back and combination sleepers: These sleepers need a balance of softness and support, and a medium-firm bed provides the ideal combination of these features with enough pressure relief to ease tension and ample support to keep the spine in a neutral alignment.
- Firm mattresses for stomach sleepers: This sleeping position requires the most support out of the bunch to prevent the hips from sinking into the bed—and throwing the spine out of alignment, as a result.
Support
Since hybrid mattresses contain coils, they excel at providing adequate support (as opposed to an all-foam bed, for instance). However, some hybrid mattresses are more supportive than others, depending on their firmness level, coil system and durability. The most supportive hybrid mattresses have a firmer profile and individually wrapped coils paired with at least two comfort layers. Some hybrid beds, like the Saatva Classic, contain reinforced support systems consisting of dual-coil layers.
Pressure Relief
Hybrid beds also offer great pressure relief, thanks to their mixed-material construction. The coils help support the lumbar area, while the memory foam or latex comfort layers cradle the joints and contour high-pressure areas like the hips and shoulders. However, if you find yourself craving a more pressure-relieving bed, consider a softer hybrid mattresses, such as the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid or plush version of the Nolah Evolution 15.
Motion Isolation
Due to their spring base layer, hybrid mattresses can sometimes lack the same motion isolation abilities as a memory foam bed. However, certain hybrid mattresses—like the Bear Elite—also perform well in this category due to their combination of individually wrapped coils and dense, movement-absorbing foam layers. If motion isolation is a top concern (and you prefer a hybrid mattress), look for models with thick foam layers and wrapped coils, which can help limit motion transfer.
Cooling
Because of their airflow-promoting coil bases, hybrid mattresses are often more cooling than other mattress types. However, some hybrids take temperature regulation one step further by incorporating cooling covers and gel- or copper-infused foams in their constructions, which can be beneficial for hot sleepers or those who live in warmer climates. Keep in mind these additional cooling features usually total to a higher-priced mattress, but it can be worth the investment if you are a chronic hot sleeper.
