A few months ago, I noticed an interesting phenomenon: China Mobile users are able to access a range of Google services while using roaming services overseas.
Testing showed that Google-related domains were resolved to 120.25.173.145. A Whois lookup indicates that this IP address belongs to Alibaba Cloud Computing, and some IP geolocation databases suggest that the server is most likely deployed in Alibaba Cloud’s South China 1 region (Shenzhen).
By means of DNS hijacking, it is possible to access Google services from within networks in mainland China, but it cannot be used to play YouTube videos. I believe they may be forwarding ports such as 443 to one of Google’s load-balancing servers, but that server does not handle YouTube video streaming.
