@seberg, you did the original merge. as you said, this is a more complicated fix than the previous. OTOH, there is always 1.11.2 if there is a problem ;) |

I am going to put this in 1.11.x. However, I will include neither it nor #7736 in 1.11.1 so that that release can go forward without further testing. |

Backport of #5706.
Not sure I want to backport this, just putting it up for consideration. The backport was problem free and this fixes #7720 for 1.11 if we want it.
