Probs with classes: cannot instantiate

Hi all! Sorry for asking a [stupid] question: Building and instantiating a class in the interpreter works pretty well. Nevertheless in the file modus it produces error messages like: call of non function Example: This is the interpreter stuff: [d:\]python Python 2.0 (#8, Oct 16 2000, 17:27:58) [MSC 32 bit (Intel)] on win32 >>> class DirParser: ... def display(self): ... print "This is the display method!" ... >>> x = DirParser() >>> x.display() This is the display method! >>> This is the file [ DirParser.py] stuff: class DirParser: def display(self): print "This is the display method." To test this i use classtester.py in the same directory [which is in path]: import DirParser x = DirParser() x.display() The error messages: x = DirParser() ... TypeError: call of non-function ( type module ) ... Any help will be appreciated!! Thank you!!! TIA Markus

Question re: eval()

I want to eval() an expression, but have some of the variables in it be lazily evaluated. E.g., class D: def __getitem__(self, name): if name == 'n': return 3 d = D() x = eval('n + 1', d) but the eval function accepts only a dictionary as the second parameter. (Also 'No' for the answer;-) Just to avoid questions 'Why do you need it?', I would use it in PySymbolic (but not in its Kernel!) for defining new Symbol instances in fly (it's very tedious to define 'b = Symbol("b")',etc all the time). Here lazy.py would be something like the following: #Begin of lazy.py import UserDict,sys class myDict(UserDict.UserDict): def __getitem__(self, key): if not self.data.has_key(key): print 'No name %s defined, using default 777'%(`key`) self.data[key] = 777 return self.data[key] sys.modules['__builtin__'].__dict__ = myDict(sys.modules['__builtin__'].__dict__) #EOF lazy.py When trying to set sys.modules['__builtin__'].__dict__, an exception TypeError: read-only special attribute is raised. You could've just said: jsp_content = file.readlines() (note that this, like your existing code, reads the entire file into memory, which might not be a good idea if your file is huge) Second, (this isn't Python related) you probably don't want to split your file into lines in any case. HTML is *not* a line based language. The following is a perfectly valid HTML tag: <img src="foo.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Howdy!" > Your code wouldn't work with such tags, since it works line-by-line. -- C. HTML Parser

Hello, I am trying to write an HTML parser. I am starting off with a simple one like so: # html_parser.py import re import string newline=re.compile('\n') HTMLtags=re.compile('<.*>') file=open('C:\Documents and Settings\dvoitenko\My Documents\Python\index.jsp', 'r') input_file = file.read() file.close() jsp_content = newline.split(input_file) # loop thru lines ... for line in jsp_content[:]: result=HTMLtags.search(line) tag_content = line[result.start()+1:result.end()-1] print '<'+string.upper(tag_content)+'>' Which simply uppercases all html tags. Well, it actually uppercases everything else which I do not like. What seems to be wrong here? Say if I have a link <a href=hello.jsp>Hello</a> it will result into <A HREF=HELLO.JSP>HELLO</A>... which is not right.

Controlling processes (popen2)

First some background info: I've been learning Python seriously now for about a month and the first real task I am faced with is to write a Python script which controls a BASIC process. Additionally I have to do the same thing in Java. (The BASIC process is used to interface with a third party database [open files, read, write, etc], but this is just fyi.) The script must be cross-platform but I am testing this on Win2000 as I don't have a Linux box available at the moment. The problem is that in Python I have to terminate all output to the BASIC process with a \r (rather than \n). In Java, I can use either \n or \r. To illustrate this, here is a simple BASIC program which compiles to a C executable called say, TESTIT (note that a ':' is used for concatenation here): INPUT LINE1 INPUT LINE2 PRINT "LINE1=" : LINE1 PRINT "LINE2=" : LINE2 Here is the companion Python script which controls this process: import popen2 instream, outstream = popen2.popen2("TESTIT.exe") outstream.write("dead\n") outstream.write("parrot\n") outstream.flush() print instream.readline(), print instream.readline(), outstream.close() instream.close() ...and here is a similar one in Java: import java.io.*; public class Test1 { public static void main(String[] args) { try { Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("TESTIT.exe"); OutputStreamWriter outstream = new OutputStreamWriter(process.getOutputStream()); BufferedReader instream = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(process.getInputStream())); outstream.write("dead\n"); outstream.write("parrot\n"); outstream.flush(); System.out.println(instream.readLine()); System.out.println(instream.readLine()); instream.close(); outstream.close(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } The output from the Python script using the \n is: LINE1=dead LINE2= Notice that it printed the literal text but not the data sent to the input stream for the second line. And the corresponding output from Java (which also uses \n): LINE1=dead LINE2=parrot If I change the Python script to use \r, it matches the Java output. Now I know you're going to say to use \r (and that is what I'm doing), but the question is, why does Python behave differently? Any ideas? Daniel Klein Portland, OR USA

He called out for assistence and Birgit and me joined the team. * A few months later, we started a a new subproject, called ccl (component and class library), as an abstract layer over the pure api calls. The idea is, to isolate the api calls in a way that they can be exchanged to gain independence from a special os but have them (the api calls) still available if a programmer needs them for special purposes. Why we are going this way? There are two reasons for it: * We don't want to maintain two libraries, a c based one and an eiffel based one on top of the c code. Yes, we have some c code in it, but the functions are mostly simple 1 to 1 mappers and for this fact nearly bug free right from the start. * We found, that in real world application development it is very useful to have the possibillty to invoke api calls if there is nothing in the library which fulfills your needs. ccl is not finished, but it supports a form class, all windows standard controls and some of the common controls of the windows api now. The next subproject, started a few weeks ago, is kk, which is in a very early state. This is the two way design tool on the top of the ccl. What we are doing now: * Birgit is improving the win32 api calls in a way that we need much lesser c code. * Geoff is coding lots of examples for win32 api programming with eiffel, collecting tons of information resources for further development and providing some help with ccl and kk. He is a very busy man ;-) * Sven and me are currently rebuilding the streaming mechanism in the heart of the ccl, so that xml becomes the standard stream format for exporting and importing component properties. This will mostly be used from the visual designer of kk. What we plan: * Finishing the windows controls encapsulation of ccl, * building an abstract database access layer for the ccl, * developing of data sensitive controls and finally, after further development of kk, * porting the whole thing to linux. If we don't find more helping hands, I guess we need 6 - 9 months until we can start the port to linux. createfilehandler on Win32

Hi, I'm a newbie - I hope someone can point me in the right direction here. I'd like to have a GUI for a "client socket" displaying incoming messages from a server. Now, I know this is done quite elegantly using the createfilehandler method in Tkinter, but this method is not available for win32 apps. My question - is there a simple way to accomplish this task (i.e. program a client socket, 'waiting' for messages) without using the createfilehandler method? cheers ~~====----..----====~~ Kris Botha

PythonWin prompts for win32api methods

I have been exploring win32api methods using PythonWin. One of the features I like most about PythonWin is the popup prompts for objects and methods complete with doc strings where present. When I import win32api it does do this. It is easy enough to flip back and forth to the win32 helpfiles, but5 so much nicere to do it inline. How can I enable this feature please?
