xforms (W3C) intepreter in Python?

I've been playing the DHTML, XML-RPC & Zope game for 2 years now, and am ready to move on to something more cross platform and robust. For data entry, I've been looking at xforms (the W3C standard, not the Linux frame buffer gui). I like the idea of Xforms, and would like to tinker with an xforms "interpreter" that could support "bolt-on" GUI's. I don't want to be tied to just wxPython, Swing (via Jython) or even win32gui. Anyone else looking at xforms? I'd like the "interpreter" to run in CPython and Jython, and be abstract enough to support any gui. Curses Python Programming - statusline

Hello! I just started messing with curses programming and now I'm trying to use a feature which C curses programs use: the statusline. I want my program to have a line of text at the bottom of the screen, regardless of the size of the terminal like in the 'mutt' mail client. Is this possible? I heard several other curses functions that were implemented in C aren't implemented in Python. I also saw several C curses programs that use a 'struct' to get the screen size - this way they "calculate" the position of the statusline. Thanks in advance! -- Eliran Gonen

ANY callable except a "regular function" can be "used as a staticmethod" (and it can ONLY be used that way) -- because looking up an attribute in a class's dictionary morphs functions into methods (bound or unbound as appropriate), but it morphs no other types of attribute whatsoever. Indeed there's a recipe I put in the online cookbook that uses this to build static methods for old Python versions very simply (sorry, no URL at hand, but it shouldn't take you long to find if you're interested!). This is not a limitation of bound methods -- you can think of it (at least in the case of newstyle classes, but classic ones work the same in this respect) as due to the way object.__getattribute__ is coded. ...time to run screeming from the building <wink>. His problem, is that "There doesn't seem to be any good books on Python". Pressed a little more, it was refined to "either the documentation assumes you've never programmed before, and spends volumes of text introducing loop constructs etc." (that was the commentary on the Tutorial <sigh>), "or, the author seems to be in love with the language purely for its advanced and obscure features" (he'd hoped 'Thinking in Python' would be like the C++/Java equivalent...). Pressed a little bit further, he commented: "what I'm really looking for is a quick introduction for someone that allready knows C++ or Java". So on the positive side, our CTO is voluntarily learning Python -- on the other hand, every time I show him the pydiomatic way of doing something, his eyes get really big and he comments "you can do that? Why isn't that in the documentation?" Followed by me pointing out where in the docs it is, followed by "well, that's not very obvious..." In case you were wondering, he's a self-admitted contrarian who expects things to be the way he thinks they should be. He's also my boss (he say, I do), and also probably one of the most brilliant analytical minds I've ever met (i.e. I think he could do amazing things with Python if I can manage to get him behind it instead of tripping over it :-) Does anyone have a writeup or a reference to "pydiomatic problem solving" especially for an audience of expert, large scale C++ and SQL programmers? (I must admit I'm having problems getting people to think of a Python solution, instead of first going 'how do I do this in C++', and then 'how do I translate my C++ to Python?' -- advice graciously accepted) If I have to start from scratch, I would (so far) summarize from FAQ 6 (Python's design), 4 (Programming in Python), 8 (Python on Windows), Selected sections from "Dive into Python", Python Cookbook?, DB API 2.0 (although I'm not sure I can justify $1200/devel for mxODBC yet...), Intro to Numeric (we do numerical models), PIL/Piddle/PDFGen, Automating Office from Win32 Programming, selected topics that have modules in the stdlib (probably borrowing from effbot's work), Gordon's Installer/Py2Exe, ??? Am I missing anything? What I've been looking for, and not found, is examples of how dynamic typing and interface polymorphism make your code shorter, simpler, and easier. I will of course compare them to C++ templates (with the bonus of seeing your code instead of all the type declarations), but I was hoping for a couple of good examples. __import__ confusion

Hi, I'm having some trouble understanding how __import__ works. From the docs I read that "from spam.ham import eggs" results in "__import__('spam.ham', globals(), locals(), ['eggs'])" rendering the later function call 'eggs', what ever that is, but I actually get 'ham'! For example: >>> __import__('os.path', globals(), locals(), 'join') <module 'ntpath' from 'C:\Python22\lib\ntpath.pyc'> So I wonder what the last argument is for since it seams rather useless. I could'va just written: >>> __import__('os.path', globals(), locals(), 'asdfasdfasf') <module 'ntpath' from 'C:\Python22\lib\ntpath.pyc'> Now I realize that the last argument should be a list but that doesn't seam to make a difference. How to get the 'name' of an int

Hi, I would like to get the 'name' of a variable to do something like this: causea = 12 causeb = 13 for cause in (causea, causeb): print "%s = %s" %(name(cause), cause) The result should be: causea = 12 causeb = 13 How can I achieve this? Thanks, Hans
