Hi Sancar, 1) PHP does some really nasty things in how it treats globals, and you will have to break yourself of those sorts of habits -- Python offers much cleaner alternatives, like grouping similar functionality into modules which can be imported; the import functionality in python is pretty flexible. Python won't pack a ton of garbage into a giant, global 'dictionary' (what python calls associative arrays). There are modules (bundled of code) which you can import to handle your needs. 2) Check out the traceback[1] module for retrieving the traceback info for logging to a file, and cgitb[2] modules for printing the traceback as HTML to your browser. 3) http://docs.python.org/ is a great place to start - it has a lot of well written and generally thorough documentation with examples 4) It's better to collect all your eventual output into a string that you print - there are examples at [3]. You can import from other modules as needed (even conditionally), grow your string for output, then finally print it like (this example was adapted from one found on [3]): output = '<html><head>' output += '<title>My Page</title>' output += '</head><body>' output += '<h1>Powers of two</h1>\n<ol>' for n in range(1,11): output += '<li>'+str(2**n)+'</li>' output += '</ol></body></html>' print output You can copy-paste this right into your Python interactive shell to see the output. I just wanted to take a break from writing some code to thank the list for all the help you've NOT given me :-) And I do mean that.... but I should explain... At least three times today, I've been working on various bits of code, and run into a problem that I just could not figure out. And each time, I started writing a post, complete with code samples and my thoughts... and in EVERY case, so far, I've found the answer on my own ONLY after writing that post. Thankfully, I've not actually posted them, saving myself from looking like TOO much of an idiot (especially since one case was a REALLY glaring example of a Logic Error). I could say that it's all because I'm learning and figuring things out on my own, but because I don't want to post poorly formed help requests on any list I belong to, actually writing out a post helps me organize my thoughts, the problem, and what I've done so far, and usually THAT is when the solution actually hits me. Even when I don't send the post, just having a target that forces me to actually organize and spell out what the problem is helps immensely. So though I've only posted a small bit here and on python-win, I did want to thank y'all for helping me when you have, and even when you actually haven't! Python OOP Problem

Hi, all. My problem is: 1) I have a database(postgresql) 2)I'm getting some string from database(string is a classname - written by me). 3)I need to construct new object from this string. In java it's done by Class.forName().newInstance(); For instance: 1)I receive the string: "MyObject". 2)o = MyObject(); 3)o.myfunction(); Saw this link http://stackoverflow.com/questions/452969/does-python-have-an-equivalent-to…, but it doesn't work for me. May be I do something wrong. I just started to learn python. Help, please. PS: Sorry for poor English. Mikluxo

I said, given a good index searching should never be the problem. To make the "good index", you've got a slightly different but easier problem to tackle: parsing. I realize that parsing inconsistent data isn't as easy as talking about it; but it's generally much easier than trying to fuzzily grep through the raw data.

getting name of passed reference

I'm just curious if anyone knows of a way to get the variable name of a reference passed to the function. Put another way, in the example: def MyFunc ( varPassed ): print varPassed; MyFunc(nwVar) how would I get the string "nwVar" from inside of "MyFunc"? is it possible?

Someone posts a question, responds back with a "n/m I found the solution, here it is" and his response is essentially to berate them, telling them how crappy their code is and that they should at least _try_ the code. Bear in mind that I even told him the reason he wasn't able to run it is because he's pasting it into the interactive terminal. He then responded back AGAIN with the same insults and the same issue that shows he didn't really even read my last response. If anything, I should be faulted for actually engaging him and not just letting it go.
