Speed issues with Applet/Applications?

Hi, I wrote a script which allows me to decompress from a .ZIP file, and appropriately sizing names of files that are longer than 31 characters. However the problem I am encountering, is that when I run the script in the Python IDE, it runs at full speed. When I run the script as a standalone application or applet, then it runs VERY SLOW! I am using Python 2.1, and I am using running this script on a PowerG4. So I am wondering if someone else has had this problem when using the application or applet, and/or if there is a good solution to this problem.

I'm trying to make a set of scripts that will go back and forth between Classical Mac OS and OS X, using the Carbon Python. Now I have some questions: #1: Is there a way to tell what version of 'mac' I'm on? os.name() doesn't help much... ;) #2: Assuming I'm on X, is there a way to execute command-line programs? I found posix.execve(), but does this work on OS X?

I tried pygame, but had quite a bit of trouble getting the simple tutorial working. I never got a specific answer, but apparently there is a problem with fonts on the Mac? Would love to get it working... Do you have it running Carbonized? If not, where'd you get the non-Carbon files, because that's all they have on the site right now.

Yes, this is a bug. Python 2.2b1 is much more critical that you're calling base class methods only with classes that are truly derived from that baseclass. And HorizontalPanes is a subclass of Widget, not of ClickableWidget. What seems to fix it for me is calling Widget.__init__ in stead of ClickableWidget.__init__, but it could well be that the correct fix is to inherit ClickableWidget in stead. Just, could you investigate this and commit a fix? Thanks for the feedback Chris - That's the route I'm taking currently. I'm currently a shockwave game developer, so my focus is on games. I'm looking to python since it's easy to learn (so they say) and provides some serious speed enhancements over shockwave and it's free (unlike the $1200 for each platform Macromedia takes for Director). I was sort of hoping to skip the general file IO and string concatenation stuff, but I'm finding that there isn't much avaiable in the way of tutorials specific to graphics/sound/user interaction. Oh well, so I'll have to learn more:) If you run across anything the fits the bill for game tuts, let me know. Folks, if you want to contribute to MacPython: here's another chance. There's a couple of things I noted after reading Andrew Kuchling's "Whats new in Python 2.2" document (see it via www.python.org). I'll drop them here, if you want to take one of these on: let the mailing list know and go ahead. - There's a new builtin help() function to give all sorts of help on objects and such. It works rather badly in the IDE (worse there than in the raw interpreter). It would be nice if this functionality got integrated in the IDE, maybe as a help window, maybe otherwise. - The implementation of profiling has changed. Can someone check that the profile hooks in the IDE still work, please? - Passing of 8-bit filenames to open() has changed. Can someone on a non-MacRoman system test that filenames still work as expected? - For MachO-Python: on Windows Python not only understands the ".py" extension but also ".pyw". The latter is run with pythonw.exe, which is the "windows-aware" interpreter (python.exe fires up a dos-box to run your script). The situation on Windows is pretty similar to the situation on OSX with MachO-Python: we have the command line interpreter and the Python.app application. slicing of structseq objects fails

Python-devvers, Russel Owen reported the following bug, and it turns out to be a general bug, not a MacPython one: slicing the structseq-style tuples returned by time.gmtime() returns a sequence with NULLs in it. Shortly afterwards Python crashes on my SGI. Any takers?
