Speed issues with Applet/Applications?

Hi, I wrote a script which allows me to decompress from a .ZIP file, and appropriately sizing names of files that are longer than 31 characters. However the problem I am encountering, is that when I run the script in the Python IDE, it runs at full speed. When I run the script as a standalone application or applet, then it runs VERY SLOW! I am using Python 2.1, and I am using running this script on a PowerG4. So I am wondering if someone else has had this problem when using the application or applet, and/or if there is a good solution to this problem.

I'm trying to make a set of scripts that will go back and forth between Classical Mac OS and OS X, using the Carbon Python. Now I have some questions: #1: Is there a way to tell what version of 'mac' I'm on? os.name() doesn't help much... ;) #2: Assuming I'm on X, is there a way to execute command-line programs? I found posix.execve(), but does this work on OS X?

Mac OS X Python 2.2a4 Bug (_not_ Mac Python)

Hey, I've downloaded and compiled the latest version of ('Unix') Python (2.2a4) on a Mac OS X 10.1 (5G64) and have discovered a rather serious bug. Basically you cannot have more than one version of Python running at any time. Try it. From Terminal.app you can launch one copy but when launching the second you get a Bus Error. Every time. I'm seeing this with 2.2a4 on a PowerMac G4 and with 2.2a3 on a Powerbook G4 both with 5G64. I've tried compiling Python without the carbon libraries (--without-xxx-yyy) and that didn't help matters much (the odd thing is that it allowed me to run 2 instances without crashing - but the 3rd killed it). Also - if you login to Mac OS X via the console it is impossible to launch an interactive Python session (and probably impossible to just launch oneshot scripts too). When I try I get the following console errors: KCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection cannot connect to server KCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection cannot connect to server KCGErrorInvalidConnection: CGSGetEventPort: Invalid connection Which look to me like Core Graphics errors. Why should a command line Python (compiled without the carbon cruft) need access to the Core Graphics Server. Something REALLY strange is going on... I'd really like to see Python for Mac OS X (not Jack's Mac Python) be a pure unix implementation of Python with any Mac specific stuff in shared libraries. I would have assumed this would have been the case but it doesn't look like it is. Cheers for any insight on the matter. Jon.

Line endings are a hot topic. Right now Python is picky -- Python for a given platform will only read text files (incl code) with the correct line endings for that platform. There are various ways to convert. Simply transferring files via ftp (as text files, not binary!) or archiving them as StuffIt or Zip and unarchiving them on the Mac will fix line endings. StuffIt Expander is a free program that will unpack nearly any kind of archive; by default (I believe) it fixes line endings on text files; it's certainly a setting you can change. BBEdit can write files using Mac, unix or Windows line endings. To convert a few files, simply open them, change the platform to Mac (one of the pop-up menus on the window's tool bar) and save. There are also mass conversion utilities including "Change Type and Creator" (despite the name). -- Russell

Building Python - GUSI problems with CW7

I am trying to use Python in a a program, and when I execut PyInitialize(), all hells break lose. To diagnose the problem, I wish to build Python so I can step into the code. However, it requires GUSI2Carbon, which I have downloaded from the MacPython site. Unfortunately, it does not contain pre-built libs, and when I try to build it (with CW7 Pro), I get a bunch of compile errors. I'm new to MacPython (although not new to Python), so I do not know the proper way to correct this. Can someone point me to some prebuilt GUSI2 Carbon Debug libs? Cheers! -- Paul T. Building mxDateTime for Python 2.0

I am trying to re-compile the mxDateTime shared library to let me use DateTime in Python 2.0 -- the shared library provided throws exception on import about using the wrong version. I have never compiled any type of shared library before, so girding my loins and firing up CW 5 I set up a shared library project and: 1. included the mxDateTime.c code 2. included stub libraries PythonCore and MSL ShLibRuntime.Lib Result: -- Link failure, could not find function 'floor' I knew this is a standard C function, so I threw the stub MathLib into the pot and cooked. Got a bunch of warnings about duplicate definitions of math functions (in PythonCore and MathLib). Decided to ignore warnings. Successfully made the shared library, successfully imported DateTime into Python 2.0 (actually 2.0b1). However, the test script for mxDateTime failed an assertion. Basically, a function DateTimeFromTicks, which uses the floor function, fails to give predicted results. My question: Am I including the correct library in my project to get the "right" version of floor? Thanks, Vince Marchetti
