Missing extensions for Panther Python

The Python 2.3.0 distributed with Mac OS X 10.3 is missing three extensions typically found on other platforms: _bsddb _tkinter readline Since these are part of the standard library, it is somewhat annoying to build them after the fact. Using Python with Terminal

Is there a simple way to use python with the Mac Terminal so that the arrow keys will allow you to execute previously executed statements? I'm using python 2.3.0 on 10.3. Also, a random Python question. I'd like to get an arbitrary element from a sets.Set _without_ mutating the sets. The most concise way I could find is this: for item in someset: break Which will assign item to an arbitrary element in someset. This expression really annoys me, though. Is there a better way? Nick

Pygame installation

I want Pygame for OS X (10.3, preferably). <URL: http://www.pygame.org/download.shtml > appears to direct me to <URL: http://undefined.org/python/pimp/ >, but I can't reach undefined.org (or www.undefined.org, or ...). I've written Pygame lead Pete Shinners. I've received no response. I'm open to suggestion. 'Anyone happen to have installa- tion bundles handy? Does anyone know whether the sources generate cleanly under 10.3?

Weirdness with ld/PyQt-Mac build

Everything seemed to build fine (Qt 3.3.4, latest versions of QScintilla, SIP, and PyQt), and install without incident. However, PyQt applications no longer launch: it seems they don't see libqscintilla. Here's a typical message: Contents/MacOS/Eric 3 can't open library: libqscintilla.5.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2) This is puzzling because that library is correctly installed in /Developer/qt/lib, which is where it should be. So I don't see why these other apps can't see it. Looking at the logs from building PyQt, I ran across this strange warning: ld: warning -L: directory name (/Users/kevin/Desktop/qt-mac-free-3.3.4-shared/lib) does not exist The directory that "does not exist" is the build directory for Qt. After ~ building Qt, I moved the build folder to /Developer and renamed it qt. Then I began building PyQt and the other bits. I'm pretty sure that these other apps think that libqscintilla.dylib should be in /Users/kevin/Desktop/qt-mac-free-3.3.4-shared/lib. But why? ~ What difference does it make, especially when I have $QTDIR set in my path to point to /Developer/qt? And if this is a problem, how do I fix it (short of rebuilding Qt in /Developer/qt--groan...) Using UKKQueue with PyObjC

Hi, I'm currently trying to use the UKKQueue class to monitor file changes from my PyObjC application. After some fiddling I got the basics working, but encountered some problems and questions: * What is the minimal way to include such an ObjC wrapper class with py2app? I am using the setup.py from RestEdit [1] right now, but this looks overly complicated. Also this setup doesn't work when using --alias * I'm using the notifications provided by NSWorkspace: NSWorkspace.sharedWorkspace().notificationCenter().addObserver_selector_ name_object_( self, "documentChanged:", None, None) Is there a way to register an observer which listens to specific objects only? UKKQueue sends notifications with the filename as object, but as <type 'objc.pyobjc_unicode'> and simply replacing the last None in the above method with the filename string didn't work. * This is more a PyObjC question: Can I use any Python class as a delegate for UKKQueue? EasyDialogs + Appscript + iPhoto = zombies!

Hi, I've written a small appscript that exports an iPhoto album using the "album" photo album tool (written in Perl, but I don't have time to rewrite it... :-/). I wrote the Python script and installed it as /Library/Scripts/Applications/iPhoto/iphoto2album so I can use it from the global Scripts menu. It works fine, but it leaves a zombie Python process lying around every time I run it. I don't know a whole lot about unix process control, but I found that to avoid zombie processes you need to "double-fork". py2app troubles

I've got a Tkinter application that works fine when I launch it via pythonw. This is on 10.3.7, default 2.3.0 Python install, added the MacPython stuff and installed _tkinter from Package Manager. After successfully installing py2app 0.1.7, I modified my setup.py file and then did a "python setup.py py2app" to build my app as a standalone, and again everything worked fine. No error messages, and the app was sitting in the dist folder. However, upon launching the app I get an immediate error: ----------------------------------------------------- TclError: Can't find a usable init.tcl in the following directories: @TCL_IN_FRAMEWORK@ /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/lib/tcl8.4 /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/lib/tcl8.4 /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/library /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/library /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/tcl8.4.7/library /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/tcl8.4.7/library @TCL_IN_FRAMEWORK@ This probably means that Tcl wasn't installed properly. ----------------------------------------------------- Since I'm able to use the app via pythonw, is it really the case that Tcl isn't properly installed? I do have a Tcl.framework that contains an init.tcl, but there isn't one anywhere in the Python framework. Anybody have an idea how I've goofed up here? Thanks! Dave Opstad
