SciPy installer for Panther Python, anyone?

I'd like to quickly evaluate SciPy for a project, but I can't seem to find a binary distribution for 10.3's Python anywhere. Am I not looking hard enough? Tried to build from the source but the amount of dependencies for building it makes this not a viable option right now. Just

So PyOXIDE is based on the traditional way to embed python in an application (explicitly calling the python APIs to access and call stuff), and this worked reasonably well. For example, it runs various scripts at startup, which register various callbacks to handle things like new documents, new interactives, etc... (and then the underlying Objective C code explicitly calls these callbacks at appropriate points). Unfortunately, things recently have gone downhill (with either the Tiger system framework or the 2.4 unofficial official framework, with PyObjC 1.3.5(*)). I've got an "interactive" window (i.e., the interactive shell) which is loaded via a menu command - in the window's controller awakenFromNib: I've got the following code: - (void) awakeFromNib { NSLog(@"Interactive awakeFromNib"); myMain = PyImport_AddModule("__main__"); if (myMain == NULL || (PyErr_Occurred())) { //NSLog(@"Couldn't add module __main__"); PyErr_Print(); } (... and then the code that calls the python code to hook the interactive window to the text view, etc...) Now, when the interactive window is created by the menu, everything works fine (application main loop calls the Objective C code which loads a nib, nib loading calls above routine, everything fine). That python code does a bunch of stuff, loads a nib, the nib loading fires off my awakeFromNib code, which tries to get the __main__ module, and boom! So it _appears_ that any code called from Python through the Objective C bridge can no longer access the interpreter - is this correct? What would be the approach to allow this to work? Should I initialize threads support, and execute all my callbacks on a separate thread? Or would I need to create a new interpreter state for these? Or am I just plain hosed on mixing "traditional" embedding techniques with PyObjC? Apple's python extensions into Quartz2D

Hi, What's the latest with Apple's python extensions to use Quartz2D? I'd like to use them with the latest python release but I can't figure out where the original source code for the extensions are so I can't do a build. It looks like they used SWIG, but that's about as much as I figured out. Or this is something I might be able to do with PyObjC (which I never have used)? Or is there another alternative? thanks, --nickg

PyOXIDE wishes?

Sometime between now and WWDC, I'm planning on coming out with a major update for PyOXIDE <http://projects.gandreas.com/pyoxide>, and was wondering what sort of functionality others have been hoping for. Right now the list is largely bug fix related: Folding improvements Better tracking of breakpoints during editing A few crashes on initial saves/quits Update the PyOXIDE homepage and only a few new features: Out of process interactive interpreter support (which should allow interactive interpreters using a different version of python) "Non Blocking" debugger (hopefully - this is the "big ugly" since it requires some interesting threading support) So if you're looking for features/support, now's the time to ask... macho_standalone with imported module

I am playing with macho_standalone to see how it can help me build a bundle. One of the issues that I've run into is that my C++ application imports modules at run time. Is there anyway to tell macho_standalone that a particular .so file needs to be examined and dependencies need to be included for that as well? Thanks, Karl

It's a GUI question - every GUI toolkit has its own "stay on top" method. You didn't specify which toolkit you're planning to use. Hi list This might be an OS question, rather than a Python one, but I am wondering if there is a way to tell an application to be always on top (or in front) of other applications running. I'd like to create a GUI in python and it should stay on top of other background applications to which the GUI communicates. Any ideas? thor

I've tried hard-coding the path as /path/to/Contents/Resources/Help Book/index.html, but that yields "file not found." I've looked at the source docs for PythonIDE, but they're a bit cryptic. I don't quite understand how the Carbon module defines this stuff (FSSpec, etc). (I'm working with wxPython, so I need to define this stuff through Carbon.) Is there a way to do this with the os.path module? If so I haven't quite grokked how. Sets and Speed

Hi All, My research involves genomic research and the use of sets (recently introduced in version 2.4) makes my life easier in a lot of ways. However, I noticed that working with large set slows the script to unbearable speed. Below I compare two simple scripts, one makes use of a list and the other makes use of a set. The difference of 20 seconds may not be much, but let me tell you that this difference grows exponentially. When my sets reach more that 100,000 elements, a union command is painfully slow. True, a union command of a set may be much more complicated than using a list but the time difference is simply too big for me. Any thoughts/suggestions? I suppose that the obvious solution is to work with lists most of the time and use the sets only when I really need them. But then, what's the point of having those set? binary extension portability
