I saw the following on slashdot: GameSpy posted a six-page essay of Tim Sweeney's entitled "A Critical Look at Programming Languages." Does Monty Python know?

I was just wondering whether anyone has ever formally or informally told the former members of the Monty Python troupe that a popular computer programming language has been named in their honour. Python dumps core with this.. how come?

I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.2, kernel 2.0.36 with 128 MB of memory. "Python 1.5.2 (#2, Jun 13 1999, 17:00:15) [GCC 2.7.2.3] on linux2 Copyright 1991-1995 Stichting Mathematisch Centrum, Amsterdam" When I import this module, the interpreter segfaults. Thiis module provides a little guard mechanism to keep track of changes to registered variables. The error occurs when you ty to instantiate class 'basic_monitor'. Also, I have another question (very old, and I can't find this in the FAQ): I want to explicitly take a reference to an integer. Take __setattr__() for example: is origval a reference or merely a copy of self.res[ val ]? that is, do I change self.res[ val ] by changing origval? Will Python2 implement some sort of epxlicit referencing operator so that these situations won't seem as confusing? Whatever happened to var := val for assignment, and var2 = &var1 for referencing? The addition of these explicit facilities would greatly relieve a large portion of my Python problems (is there some sort of rule-list to follow to figure out when exactly Python will take a reference (like assigning from an object) or a literal value (int's)? ). My background is in MVS Cobol, CICS & Visual Basic. I have played a little with java & Perl. I have an understanding of classes & their properties & methods. Could someone explain to me the concept of .self ?

Creating Objects

Hi folks, I'm working on solving a problem that my boss put to me the other day, and I have run into a solution that I don't know how to implement in Python (or any other language for that matter) Basic description of problem (particulars not included) Work out a system that can import information from (any number) of systems, and write the infomration out (meaningfully) to any system in the set. I.e. Assume a set a set of systems [A-G] the system needs to be able to import from any of the seven systems, and write out it back out to any of the seven. Ther may or may not be multiple instances of each system type. What I have in mind is defining a set of base classes and defining the actual implementation at run-time i.e. # module my_classes.py # imported as first part of main app class system_a: def __init__(self): ..... class system_b: def __init__(self): ..... #(and so on) and then during the main program what I would like to do is ... def do_translate(insystem, outsystem): class translateclass(system_dictionary[insystem], system_dictionary[outsystem]): translateobject=translateclass(insystem, outsystem) translateobject.setsystems(input=insystem, output=outsystem) translateobject.translate() .... Unfortunately I don't think run-time class definitions like this are supported (understandably), but the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that this is how to do what my boss wants. I would much rather do 8 class definitions (in this example) than the 64 I would need to do otherwise. Am I pretty much looking at something that is un-doable, or am I just looking at it wrong? (I think the latter because there seems to be an idea floating just outside my brain range) Calishar P.s. This would make my third project done fully within in Python (at least for the RAD stage) Not bad considering my fist one started Jan 4th (yes, it was a Y2K patchup)

urllib.py patch: proxy authentication

The following patch adds support for proxies like http_proxy=http://USER:PASS@host:port/ which would formerly confuse the urllib into giving a traceback about a non-numeric port number. (the PASS@host:port portion) This patch is probably not ready for inclusion as-is, because the CVS version of python has a modified urllib that is too far distant for this patch to apply. (This is relative to 1.5.2) If I get around to to a patch that will apply to the CVS tree as well, I will submit this patch again. Other than that, I believe I have tried to live up to the standards asked for in Python patches.
