Okay, here is the basic deal. You want to make your directory look something like this... For what most people seem to do on Win32 (to the best of my knowledge), is to use the base Python directory for all "well-behaved package-structured" modules. That is, my directory structure looks something like (for my 1.5.2 version of TextTools): python mx TextTools And without any .pth files, that works fine. Similarly, had I put the same structure in: python lib mx TextTools (lib being on the Python path), it should also work, again, without the use of .pth files. That's actually the nice thing about properly packaged systems, you don't need to muck around with reconfiguring your Python path, you just drop them into an existing directory. The Python 2.0 documentation has several inconsistent descriptions. In one place, it says that under Windows and Mac, .pth files are only interpreted if they are in the python root. Elsewhere the documentation indicates that they are interpreted if they are in the lib\site-packages directory. Here is the basic problem. I have packages bar, far, and gar, all of which I want to be subpackages in the package foo, so I can write "import foo.bar as FB". If bar is a working package, the Python documentation suggests that II should be able to do what I want if I put the directory bar (containing the bar package, which has a valid __init__.py) inside a directory "site-packages\foo" and put a file "foo.pth" in the site-packages directory with the single line "foo". However, this does not work for me. Somehow, Python does not seem to understand the foo.pth file, and python complains "ImportError: No module named foo" Here are the details: I am trying to get the mx tools installed on my computer and have python 2.0 built from cvs sources in D:\Sources\python\python\dist\src and am trying to get mxTextTools installed somewhere so that I can use the following line (from the Martel genome parsing package): from mx import TextTools as TT I have installed mxTextTools in D:\Sources\Python\Python\dist\src\lib\site-packages\mx\TextTools. If I set PYTHONPATH to "D:\Sources\\Python\Python\dist\src\lib\site-packages\mx" then I can "import TextTools" but if I set PYTHONPATH to "D:\Sources\Python\Python\dist\src\lib\site-packages" then I cannot "import mx.TextTools". I keep getting an error message: "ImportError: No module named mx" This occurs even if I create a "mx.pth" file in "site-packages" with the single line "mx". I have also tried putting the "mx" directory and the "mx.pth" file in the python root (D:\Sources\python\python\dist\src). I have the registry correctly set up: "HKLM\Software\Python\PythonCore\2.0" has subkeys "InstallPath" with default value "D:\Sources\Python\Python\dist\src" "PythonPath" with default value "D:\Sources\Python\Python\dist\src\lib;D:\Sources\Python\Python\dist\s rc\lib\site-packages;d:\Sources\python\python\dist\src\pcbuild;D:\Sour ces\Python" Can anyone help me figure out how to get packages to work in the way I am trying to? Converting Perl Regex to Python!

I'm working on porting a program from Perl to Python, and i'm to a point where I need to convert their Perl regex stuff over to python. Now, I understand what is going on in the Perl if statement below, but i haven't seen to many good examples of regex stuff for Python, so i'm hurting for an translation The string i need to grab the info from looks like this: MSG notify timecode [00:00:00:00] if ($msg =~ /^MSG notify timecode \[(\d\d:\d\d:\d\d):\d\d\]/) { $cajun->{state_clock}=$1; } So, how exactly do i convert this to python? Both of those characters are legal in Mac filenames, but \ is not legal in Windows, and / is not legal on Unix. It also looks like some of the filenames contain non-printable characters and characters in the high ASCII range, which may be displayed as ? or some other character. I don't know how you can get around this offhand... maybe fiddling with the environ settings. Newbie question about 'cmpfiles'

Hello, I am a newbie user to python 2.0 Can someone explain 'filecmp' module - 'cmpfiles' function with a simple example? I am trying to compare files under 2 different directories, but unable to use this function. The 'Python Reference Library' does explain the function, but I am unable to understand the syntax. Extending Windows Shell with Python

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/psdk/shellcc/shell/Shell_Adv/namespace.htm explains how to extend the Windows Explorer so that you can browse your own namespaces. I've seen it used, for example, to allow you to browse a FTP site through the Windows Explorer. Is it possible to this in Python? I have exactly the same problem, but no solution, unfortunately. I think there must be a bug in win32com. The problem seems to arise when you use keyword arguments. If you do not use keyword arguments, and instead supply the arguments in the right sequence, it works. (I cannot test the code below though, as I haven't access to Word 8 or above). The problem with this "solution" is that you cannot omit arguments before the arguments you want to supply to the function, so you have to supply the default values explicitly for the arguments that should just take default values, and which are placed before the arguments you want to supply. This could be OK, but sometimes you cannot supply a default value explicitly to Word, because sometimes the only way to tell Word to use the default value of an argument is to omit the argument. I tried looking in the source code for win32com for bugs, but it was too complicated to understand in the limited time I had. Does anyone have a solution to this? Object editors?

I have heard of object/class browsers, either incorporated in IDE's or stand-alone. Is there any object/class editor which allows not only browsing but also editing of object values? Either stand-alone, or even better already has an associated GUI built for it. (I can use the Python Interpreter, but I am looking for something more user-friendly for non-Python programmers to use in an application.) Thanks. - Rick Lee

Request for help: arbitrary user code

I've been working on a program for a while that executes arbitrary user-provided code, and I'm trying to setup a secure, reasonably fast way of doing such. The code is generally provided as functions which are compiled and executed multiple times in a sort of fake-binding to various objects. I'm running into a problem with the way python handles namespaces for said functions - that it binds them at function compilation rather than at function call, and that they must be dictionaries. My first response was that immutable dictionaries would solve the problem - the other possibility I've come up with recently is that being able to change func.func_globals on the fly would also solve this. Anyway, I was hoping to get some comments from better minds than my own, so I've setup a zope wiki page explaining the problem I'm having - it's at http://www.bofh.net.au/mud/doc/zwiki/GlobalNamespace I'd love to solve this problem - without a good solution, it is starting to look like python just isn't suited for providing a multi-user scripting platform, which would be depressing, as in most other ways it's near-perfect...
