Since upgrading to Python 2.0b2, I'm getting quite a few exceptions like the one below, and usualy caused by xmllib.py I browsed the buglist at sourceforge, but couldnt find anything like it. Help: Chinese charactor in Tkinter

I am trying to display Chinese charactor in Tkinter. The following is the code I've tried, but the texts were displied as "?". Had I missed somthing, or just I can't do it on my system? I am using MacPython 2.0b1, Tcl & Tk 8.3.0 on MacOS 8.6, I have installed Chinese Language Kit, and I can display Chinese char in java, also using unicode. Thanks in advance! Looking for Python programmers--where to search?

My company does web applications in Python, and we're growing like nuts. Despite (or because of) being in the SF Bay Area, we're having a hard time finding Python coders. The jobs page at www.python.org appears to be in limbo due to the CNRI-BeOpen tango. Any suggestions on where to publicize our open positions? Is it appropriate to post in this newsgroup? If we can't figure something out, we're going to have to start working in Perl... -- spenrose at well dot com

Python Metalanguage confusticates and bebothers me...

Python itself is okay (well, so far anyway). But the metalanguage -- the terminology used to discuss features of the language -- is weirding me out. "Dictionaries" aren't dictionaries at all, they're associative arrays. "Tuples" don't necessarily have three elements. I suppose once I get used to this stuff it'll be okay... but it reminds me of Reinhold Neibuhr. - jonadab

A Tkinter status/information bar

Hello, I have made a simple xclient using Tkinter gui. The xclient is a small application used to connect to a server and allows the user to modify various settings etc. all through Tkinter widgets. What I would like to implement is a status/information bar at the bottom of the main window. This information area (or whatever I should call it) should contain a few lines of text constantly updated. In my various modules I have statements like print __name__,': Reading data from disk' print __name__,': Connecting to server' This information is in other words currently being printed out to the terminal window. I want this information to be printed out in my main gui window. This feature will give the user a clue of what is going on as well as being COOL ;) So, if anyone can help me figure out how to implement this I would be extremely greatful. Thx, Arild Hansen

serial communication

I am having trouble understanding how to control a serial port. I am communicating with a couple different devices on serial ports. One of the devices uses a protocal that does not end with a lf, therfore I think I am having a problem with buffering. On a side note, I cannot find documentation for termios on my Debian linux system. Would it help if I found it? I have tried the following, but it locks up at the term.read. Luc, There are many ways that this can be kludged, and certainly no recommended way. That's probably why no other posts specifically addressed your question. It gets muddier though, as the memory location storing the instance can be pointed at and known by many different names. What you may want is buried in the traceback, and can be extracted. (Don't go there). It's probably best to build whatever trace/name capabilities you're looking for into the __init__ of your classes. msvcrt.getch() from IDLE returns '\377'

Windows 98 sys.version '1.6 (#0, Sep 5 2000, 08:16:13) [MSC 32 bit (Intel)]' It seems to me that msvcrt.getch() does not work when called from IDLE. My testfile LK.Py import msvcrt Taste = msvcrt.getch() while Taste == '\377' : print ord(Taste), Taste = msvcrt.getch() print ord(Taste) In IDLE I type execfile('LK.Py') and get an endless loop printing 255 coloured blue. When I press a character key I can see this character echoed directly to the console coloured black. Is there a way out ? Georg

Accessing a COM object from Python

Hello. I am currently experimenting with accessing COM-objects from Python, as described in Mark Hammond and Andy Robinsons book "Python programming on Win32" (great book). smtplib authentication

Hi I studied the smtplib and found it does not support authentication :-( Nor can I find any rfc on the subject ?! rfc822 and others only seem to discuss the sending/recieving of mails to smtp servers that do not need to be logged in. Thats ok for locally addressed mail. However, the provider hosting our own domainname does not have an smtp server and therefore I have to use another server to relay my messages. Can anyone please explain to me how to authenticate a smtp connection from Python ? Or at least how to do it in general (if a general solution exists) ? Thanks ! Gijs Reulen
