Does Python 2.0b1 support https on Windows?

I remember reading that support for OpenSSL and https was added into socket, urllib and httplib in Python 1.6, but I don't see any mention of it in the Python 2.0b1 release document. Does anyone know if it's in there? Does it work on Windows NT? Do I have to compile a special version of Python to enable this stuff or does the regular Windows installer include ssl and https support? M2Crypto gives me this capability with Python 1.5.2 on Windows, but it's got a couple of known bugs that I have to work around, so I'm hoping there's something more solid in Python 2.0. -- - Geoff Talvola Parlance Corporation gtalvola(a)NameConnector.com

Secure Passwords in Memory

I searched DejaNews and found some similar topics, but nothing which really answered my question. I need to get the root password from the user to exec a program which requires root privileges. I would like to immediately zero out the memory used to store the password. This is easy in a language such as C, but i don't want to write a module just for this. Since you later mention you're using 1.6, the 1.6 license says you can "reproduce, ... perform and/or display publicly, prepare derivative works, distribute, and otherwise use Python 1.6 alone or in any derivative version ...", the only requirement being that you leave CNRI's copyright notice in there. Replace parts of a file?

Here's a newbie question. I'm working with a script for replacing the header and footer sections of multiple HTML files. I don't think I can use SSI here, as I need to change some file paths in these sections too. For example, the footer (in this case) is everything below the last "<hr>". Below that line, different files may look a slightly different. After the "<hr>", I want to remove everything and replace it with a standardized footer from another file. I came this far: file = open(filename, "r+") start = string.rfind(file, "<hr>") I've been looking for a function that return a substring based on a start and end value, but hasn't found any. Maybe there's a better way? Thanks, Gustaf

Hi, Two questions: 1. When I try to set the title of the root window to a blank string, it displays 'tk', although a root.title() returns a blank string. How can I have it truly display a blank string? 2. Is it possible to eliminate the frame and title bar from the root window? manipulating bits in python

I have a ??? re: manipulating bits in python. I have a need to do quick and simple bit twiddling, shiftright, invert etc. THe operator module has s shiftR but how can I catch the bit that falls off without a lot of grotty_code? Also, I can't seem to figure a "invert" number, something that would take for example, 0x01 and return 0xFE, I can do this fairly simply, but am confused at not finding a simple call for it. And the XML in b2 doesn't nearly match the XML-SIG documentation, though the "what's new" documentation sort of indicates that the XML package is related to XML-SIG. wondering-why-you're-strawmanning-ly yr's... (it wasn't about precompiled Pythonlab releases, it wasn't about beta 2... so why do you keep going there?)
